Sweater, Jacket, Hat & Blankets Knitted in King Cole Cheeky Chunky – Pattern 5621
King Cole pattern 5621 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern designed for babies and young children, covering sizes from 3 months to 4 years (chest sizes 41–58.5 cm / 16–23 in). The collection includes four distinct designs: a sweater, a jacket, a hat, and two blankets — one worked in a rib pattern and one in a lacy pattern. Each piece is knitted in King Cole Cheeky Chunky yarn, making this a satisfying and relatively quick project set suited to intermediate-level knitters. A portion of every King Cole pattern purchase is donated to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.
Materials & Needles
All designs in this pattern use King Cole Cheeky Chunky weight yarn. The sweater, jacket, and hat are worked on 6mm knitting needles, while both blanket designs are worked on 7mm knitting needles. Checking tension before beginning is strongly recommended, as the pattern provides specific tension guidelines for each design.
The Sweater
The children's sweater is a classic pullover construction worked from the bottom up. It is an ideal project for knitters who are comfortable with shaping and reading multi-size patterns.
Techniques & Construction
- Cast on and garter stitch border: The back begins with a cast-on of 39–52 stitches (depending on size) followed by 4 rows of garter stitch (every row knit) to create a neat, non-curling hem edge.
- Main pattern body: After the garter stitch border, the work transitions into the main stitch pattern, which is worked throughout the body of the sweater.
- Armhole shaping: Armholes are marked with a row marker and shaped using decreases at each end of the work.
- Neck shaping: Centre stitches are placed on a holder (thread), and each shoulder section is worked separately with decreases at the neck edge to create a neat neckline.
- Stocking stitch: Stocking stitch (right side knit, wrong side purl) is used in sections of the sweater.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – every row knit, used for the hem border
- Stocking stitch (st-st) – knit on right side, purl on wrong side
- Main pattern stitch – as specified in the pattern body
Tension
- Main pattern: 16 sts and 18 rows to 10 cm (4 in) on 6mm needles
- Stocking stitch: 14 sts and 20 rows to 10 cm (4 in) on 6mm needles
The Jacket
The jacket is a baby and toddler cardigan-style garment, also worked in King Cole Cheeky Chunky on 6mm needles. Like the sweater, it is sized from 3 months to 4 years and is constructed using classic knitting shaping techniques.
Techniques & Construction
- The jacket body is worked in a rib pattern, giving the finished garment a stretchy, snug texture that is ideal for babies and young children.
- Shaping is achieved through standard increases and decreases at key points such as armholes and necklines.
- Techniques such as passing a slipped stitch over (psso) and working stitches through the back of the stitch (tbs) are used for neat, defined decreases.
Stitches Used
- Rib pattern – the primary stitch pattern for the jacket body
- Decrease techniques
