Svadhisthana Socks by N.kaBia
What is Being Made
Svadhisthana is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by N.kaBia. This intermediate-level project creates fitted socks in multiple European sizes (EU 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43, and 44/45) using a two-color stranded knitting technique that alternates between two solid colorways throughout the leg and foot.
Craft and Techniques
Primary Craft: Knitting in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs). This sock pattern employs several traditional sock-knitting techniques to create a structured, well-fitting garment.
The pattern uses stranded colorwork, where two different yarn colors alternate in every round to create a patterned design. The cuff is worked in a single color (colour A only), establishing the foundation before the colorwork begins. The leg features a 30-stitch patterned section worked from a chart, with color A and colour B alternating in every round from round 3 onward.
Cable needle work is incorporated into the design, adding textural interest and complexity appropriate for an intermediate knitter. The pattern begins with a traditional ribbed cuff section, which provides elasticity and helps the sock stay in place.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing (Knit 2, Purl 2): Used for rounds 1-20 in the cuff to create stretch and structure at the sock opening
- Stockinette Stitch: The base stitch for the leg and foot sections
- Cable Stitches: Incorporated using a cable needle to add textural pattern elements
- Stranded Colorwork Stitches: Knit stitches worked in alternating colors (colour A and colour B) to create the patterned design in the leg
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern requires 2 skeins of 50g fingering weight sock yarn in 4-ply construction. Each skein provides 420 meters (459 yards), for a total of 100g and 840 meters (918 yards) of yarn. Two different solid colorways are used—colour A and colour B—allowing knitters to choose complementary or contrasting shades for the stranded colorwork effect.
Needles and Tools: The project uses 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.5mm (US 1.5), which are appropriate for the fingering weight yarn and create the correct gauge for a fitted sock. A cable needle is required for working the cable stitches that add texture to the design. Stitch markers (2 recommended) help track pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a darning needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Pattern Structure
The sock is constructed in the round using the DPN method, with stitches divided evenly across 4 needles. The cast-on creates 60 (64) [68] stitches depending on the chosen size. The cuff begins with ribbing worked in colour A only, establishing the elastic top of the sock. From round 21 onward, the pattern transitions to the leg section where the 30-stitch chart pattern is worked with alternating colors in every round, creating the distinctive stranded colorwork design. This intermediate technique requires attention to color changes and pattern accuracy but results in a professional-looking, durable sock.
