Suzumi Summer Sweater by Takako Takiguchi
What is Being Made
Suzumi is a beginner-friendly summer sweater designed by Takako Takiguchi. The name "Suzumi" means "cool air" in Japanese, reflecting the garment's light and airy aesthetic. This top-down knit sweater features a beautiful two-color colorwork design combining ice blue and off-white tones, creating a visually striking yet understated summer piece. The sweater is available in six sizes ranging from S to 3XL, with finished chest measurements from approximately 86 cm (33.9 inches) to 116 cm (45.7 inches) and lengths from approximately 58 cm (22.8 inches) to 78 cm (30.7 inches).
Construction Technique
Suzumi is constructed using a top-down approach, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the length. The majority of the body is worked in the round, creating seamless fabric and a continuous knitting experience. The pattern transitions to flat knitting for the curved hemline sections, which are worked separately for the front and back pieces. This hybrid construction method combines the efficiency of circular knitting with the shaping control of flat knitting, making it an excellent project for knitters developing their skills.
Stitches and Colorwork
The primary stitch used throughout Suzumi is moss stitch, a classic textured stitch that creates a subtle, bumpy fabric with excellent drape and visual interest. The sweater features two-color stranded colorwork, with colors switched every round to create the distinctive ice blue and off-white pattern. This regular color alternation allows knitters to enjoy the interplay of the two hues while maintaining the rhythm of the pattern.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Suzumi is designed for sport weight yarn, which provides a lightweight fabric ideal for warm-weather wear. The pattern calls for Garnstudio Drops Safran yarn:
- Main Color (MC): 3 to 4 balls of Garnstudio Drops Safran in Colour #50 Light Ice Blue, totaling approximately 430 to 600 meters (470 to 660 yards) depending on size
- Contrast Color (CC): 2 to 3 balls of Garnstudio Drops Safran in the off-white shade, with yardage specifications continuing in the original pattern documentation
Each ball of Garnstudio Drops Safran contains 159 meters (174 yards) per 50 grams. The sport weight classification and yarn fiber content make this pattern versatile for different seasons: the sample is worked in summer-appropriate materials, but knitters can adapt the project using cotton or linen blends for warm weather, or traditional wool for cooler seasons.
Skill Level and Accessibility
Suzumi is rated as a beginner-level pattern, making it an excellent introduction to top-down sweater construction and two-color colorwork techniques. The straightforward moss stitch and regular color changes create an engaging rhythm without overwhelming new knitters, while the top-down construction provides flexibility and the ability to monitor fit throughout the knitting process.
