Product Description
Looking for a fun crochet project? Having trouble finding something new and different?
Then give the Super Sunny Tote crochet pattern a try!
The stitch is fun and relaxing.
That stitch you see on the body is NOT slip stitch. Slip Stitch crochet is not fun and I would not do that to you. It’s my favorite stitch, half double crochet in the third loop. It’s just as easy as half double crochet. If you are not familiar with the stitch I have included a link to a tutorial in the pattern.
And it’s relaxing. I always try to design patterns that require as little looking-at-the-pattern as necessary. When working on one of my patterns you can expect to only have to glance at the pattern here or there. Once you get in the grove of the stitches you don’t have to think.
The bag is worked from the bottom up in continuous rounds. Then you split for the handles and seam them at the top with a slip stitch. No sewing!
This pattern has been tested and professionally tech edited for accuracy and clarity.
Super Sunny Tote Crochet Bag
Project Overview
The Super Sunny Tote is an intermediate-level crochet bag design created by Crochet with Mary Beth. This project combines functionality with cheerful colorwork, making it an ideal accessory for everyday use or as a handmade gift. The finished tote measures 11 inches wide by 20.25 inches long without fringe, extending to 24 inches with fringe included, providing ample space for carrying essentials.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn in a worsted weight 5-bulky classification. The yarn blend consists of 72% cotton and 28% nylon, offering durability and a comfortable hand feel suitable for a functional tote bag. The color palette features Cream (color A) requiring 2 skeins and Fiesta Varg (color B) requiring 1 skein, totaling approximately 460 yards of main color and 20 yards of contrast color.
Crocheters have successfully substituted similar yarns including Caron Big Cakes Yarn, Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted Solids, and Lion Brand's Color Made Easy Yarn. A US I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project, paired with a tapestry needle for finishing.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Super Sunny Tote employs half double crochet as the primary stitch, worked in the third loop (back loop only) to create textured fabric with visual interest. This technique of working in the back loop behind the top two loops produces a distinctive ribbed appearance while maintaining structural integrity suitable for a bag that will hold weight.
The pattern incorporates colorwork elements using the two-color yarn combination to create a sunny, cheerful design. Construction includes fringe detailing at the completion, adding movement and visual appeal to the finished piece.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The project gauge is 15 stitches and 13 rows over 4 inches in half double crochet when working in the third loop. Achieving proper gauge ensures the finished tote reaches its intended dimensions: 11 inches in width and 20.25 inches in length (24 inches including fringe), providing a practical carry-all size.
Additional Supplies
- 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
- Stuffing for structural support or decorative elements
- Scissors for yarn cutting
- Cardboard pieces (3" x 3" and 8" x 5") used for fringe creation and base reinforcement
- Tape for securing cardboard components during construction
Skill Level Considerations
Rated as an intermediate project, the Super Sunny Tote assumes familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals including chain stitches, half double crochet, and color changes. The back loop only technique adds moderate complexity while remaining accessible to crafters with some experience. The structured construction using cardboard supports makes this an excellent project for developing bag-making skills.
