Sunshine Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Sunshine Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly knitted baby blanket designed by KnitCraftCoUK. This finished blanket measures 28 inches by 30 inches, making it an ideal size for a newborn or young child. The blanket features a classic striped color pattern created through alternating yarn colors throughout the knitting process.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners and those building their foundational skills. The primary construction method is garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row on both the right and wrong sides. This produces a reversible fabric with distinctive horizontal ridges that are visible on both sides of the blanket.
The pattern introduces color work through a simple striping technique, where yarn colors are changed at specific intervals to create horizontal stripes across the blanket. The color changes are executed by switching between Mustard and Grey yarn at designated rows, allowing crafters to practice managing multiple colors in a straightforward manner.
The blanket begins with a longtail cast-on method, which is a popular cast-on technique that creates a neat, elastic edge suitable for baby items. Finishing is completed with a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch - The sole stitch used throughout the entire blanket, created by knitting every row
- Longtail Cast-on - Used to create the initial 176 stitches on the needle
Materials Required
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for delicate baby items. The recommended yarn is Robin Plush DK, specified in two colors:
- Robin Plush DK in Mustard - 200 grams
- Robin Plush DK in Grey - 200 grams
- Total yarn weight: 400 grams (or 14 ounces)
The pattern notes that any DK weight yarn may be substituted, provided you use 200 grams of each color choice. 4.5mm knitting needles are required to achieve the correct gauge. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for finishing and scissors for cutting yarn.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 36 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch (10 centimeter by 10 centimeter) square when working in garter stitch with the recommended needle size. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions of 28 inches by 30 inches.
Pattern Structure
The blanket is constructed in four distinct color blocks, each consisting of 44 rows of garter stitch. The pattern begins with 176 cast-on stitches and progresses through color changes as follows: Mustard (rows 1-44), Grey (rows 45-88), Mustard (rows 89-132), and continues with alternating colors in the established striped pattern. The garter stitch construction creates visible horizontal ridges that mark each row, with 22 ridges visible after completing the first 44 rows of Mustard yarn.
Skill Level
This pattern is classified as Beginner/Easy, making it an excellent choice for new knitters or those just beginning to explore color work. The straightforward garter stitch and simple color-changing technique require only basic knitting knowledge and fundamental skills.
