Sunny Sunflower Cushion by iKnitDesigns
Project Overview
The Sunny Sunflower Cushion is a knitted home décor project designed by iKnitDesigns. This intermediate-level cushion cover features a cheerful sunflower motif and is constructed as a single knitted piece with a functional button-closure back opening. The finished cushion measures 40 cm x 40 cm (16 inches x 16 inches), making it a substantial decorative accent suitable for sofas, chairs, or beds.
Craft and Construction Technique
This project uses the knitting craft exclusively. The cushion is knitted in one continuous piece beginning from the back buttonhole opening, which allows for an integrated closure system. The construction method creates a seamless, cohesive design where the decorative front and functional back are part of the same knitted fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches to create both structural and decorative elements:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) – The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the cushion, creating a smooth, flat fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side
- 2 x 2 rib – Used for the ribbed edging sections, providing elasticity and a finished appearance. This rib pattern (knit 2, purl 2) is worked for 5 rows at the beginning of the project
The sunflower design is incorporated into the knitted fabric, likely through color work or intarsia techniques using the three yarn colors provided.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sunny Sunflower Cushion requires double knitting (DK) weight yarn, also known as 8 ply yarn. The pattern calls for three separate 100-gram balls in the following colors:
- White
- Bright Yellow
- Black
The pattern specifies Stylecraft Special DK as a suggested yarn option, which is a 100% acrylic yarn available in the required colorways: Black (1002), Sunshine (1114), and White (1001). Each ball provides approximately 295 meters or 323 yards of yarn. Any double knitting (8 ply) yarn that matches the required tension can be substituted.
Needles and Tools
Two pairs of knitting needles are required for this project:
- 1 pair of 4 mm (UK size 8 / USA size 6) needles – Used for the main fabric worked in stocking stitch
- 1 pair of 3¼ mm (UK size 10 / USA size 3) needles – Used for the ribbed edging sections
Additionally, 4 buttons are required to complete the buttonhole closure on the back opening.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project to reach the intended finished dimensions. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch when worked on 4 mm (UK8 / USA6) needles. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches these specifications, as variations will affect the final cushion size.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic stitches such as knit, purl, and rib patterns, the incorporation of color work for the sunflower design and the management of multiple yarn colors throughout the project require some experience. Knitters comfortable with basic stitch techniques and ready to develop color-work skills will find this project appropriately challenging and rewarding.
