Product Description
In autumn while walking with my dog in the fields in the mornings I saw many sunflowers, still beautiful in spite of coming rains and cold. I was inspired by them and decided to design a square motif which could look like a small sunflower.
My Sunflower Pillowcase consists of 9 square motifs crocheted in Overlay Crochet technique.
This easy to follow pattern of a square motif is written for one size. It contains step by step full written instructions in English using standard crochet abbreviations and US terms (stitch guide is given in the pattern). It also contains lots of pictures explaining all the tricky and difficult places and how the motifs are joined.
Crochet level: Intermediate (front post stitches are used in this pattern), though an “adventurous” beginner can handle it!
Materials: DK yarn of 5 colours. (40 - 50 yards (37 - 46 m) in total for one motif.
Shown in Alize Superlana Klasik and Yarnart Merino De Luxe 50 (8 ply/11 wpi). Suggested yarns and shades are shown below.
Sunflower Pillowcase by LillaBjörnCrochet
What is Being Made
The Sunflower Pillowcase is an original crochet design by LillaBjörnCrochet (Tatsiana Kupryianchyk) that creates a decorative pillow cover composed of nine square motifs. Each motif is designed to resemble a small sunflower, inspired by the designer's autumn walks through fields where sunflowers remained beautiful despite rain and cold weather. The finished pillowcase allows for creative color customization, as different color palettes will produce entirely unique visual effects while maintaining the same structural design.
Crochet Techniques Used
Overlay Crochet is the primary technique employed in this pattern. This specialized crochet method creates dimensional effects by layering stitches to form decorative motifs that appear to float on or overlay a base fabric. The technique is particularly effective for creating realistic floral designs like the sunflower squares featured in this project. Overlay crochet requires intermediate-level skills and precision in stitch placement to achieve the desired visual impact.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes standard crochet stitches combined through the overlay crochet technique to build the nine individual square motifs that compose the complete pillowcase. The motifs are then assembled together to form the finished cover. The structured square format ensures consistent sizing and straightforward assembly of the component pieces.
