Product Description

This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

You will need 3 colors of yarn for the background, cone & ice cream scoop. You could use variegated yarn (like in the “sherbet” cone) or solid colors for different “flavors”. This is a great way to use up scraps! For projects using 3 colors, (one for the background & two for the cone & ice cream), you will need approximately 2 oz of the background color & approx 1 oz of the cone & ice cream colors in a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn.

For added decoration, you can stitch French knots for chocolate chips or nuts to the finished square.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.

Summer Vacay Mosaic Square – Ice Cream Cone Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Summer Vacay Mosaic Crochet Square – Ice Cream Cone is a decorative mosaic crochet square designed by Cyndie Birdsong. This pattern creates a charming ice cream cone motif suitable for use in cushion projects and other home décor applications. The finished square features a vibrant, dimensional design that captures a summery aesthetic through mosaic crochet techniques.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses crochet as its primary craft method. The pattern specifically employs mosaic crochet, a specialized technique that creates interesting shapes and texture by strategically carrying yarn colors and working through specific stitches to build a picture or design. Mosaic crochet allows crafters to achieve detailed, multi-colored designs without the complexity of traditional color-changing methods. While mosaic crochet can initially appear confusing when reading graph charts, this pattern by Cyndie Birdsong is designed with clarity in mind to make the technique accessible even to beginning crocheters who have some foundational crochet experience.

Stitches and Techniques

The pattern utilizes graph-based charting to guide stitch placement and color work. Mosaic crochet typically involves working with slip stitches and single crochet stitches in a structured pattern that allows yarn to be carried and dropped to create the mosaic effect. The technique requires reading and following a visual chart to determine where to place stitches and which colors to use at each point in the design.

Materials

  • Yarn Weight: Aran and worsted weight yarns are suitable for this project, providing good stitch definition for the mosaic pattern
  • Crochet Hook: Appropriate hook size for your chosen yarn weight (typically size H/8mm to I/9mm for worsted and aran weights)
  • Yarn Colors: Multiple colors needed to create the ice cream cone design and background

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While mosaic crochet techniques are explained to be accessible, the pattern assumes crafters have foundational crochet knowledge and experience recognizing stitches and following charts. The intermediate level reflects the skill required to successfully read mosaic charts and execute the color-carrying techniques involved.

Project Application

The Summer Vacay Mosaic Square is designed as part of a cushions project collection, making it ideal for creating decorative pillow covers or as a component in larger cushion designs. Finished squares can be assembled together or used individually as accent pieces.
