Product Description
This pattern is for the perfect summer tote! It can be used for a day at the beach or for an Everyday handbag! The unique texture gives it stability as well as durability! You may use 3 colors or as many colors as you'd like! I used Paintbox Cotton DK, and for the middle section I used Paintbox Cotton Aran to add stability. Gauge on this pattern is a matter of personal preference, but I have included my gauge for you. This is my first pattern, and though it has been tested, there may still be a few minor mistakes. Please feel free to bring them to my attention. You can also find this pattern on my website! If you have any questions feel free to reach out! Thank you and Enjoy!
Summer Trifecta Tote by Danielle Hall
What Is Being Made
The Summer Trifecta Tote is a colorful crocheted bag designed by Danielle Hall of Boho Dream Design. This intermediate-level project creates a practical, three-color tote bag perfect for summer use. The design features a structured base with handles, making it suitable for everyday carrying while showcasing vibrant color blocking through the use of three coordinating yarn colors.
Crochet Techniques Used
This tote is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques worked primarily in the round throughout the entire project. The pattern employs post stitches, specifically back post single crochet, which creates textured definition and adds structural integrity to the finished bag. Working in the round allows for seamless construction and maintains consistent shaping as the tote grows from the base upward. The use of different hook sizes—a 4.5 mm hook for the main tote body and a 6 mm hook for the handles—demonstrates how hook selection influences fabric density and drape in different sections of the garment.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (SC) – The primary stitch forming the foundation and body of the tote, creating a dense, stable fabric
- Chain (CH) – Used to establish the foundation chain and create structural elements throughout the pattern
- Slip Stitch (SS) – Joins rounds and creates seamless transitions between color changes
- Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) – Adds textural interest and dimensional detail to the tote's construction
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Summer Trifecta Tote requires three coordinating cotton yarns in DK and worsted weights. The designer used WAK The Cotton in Sand (approximately 200 yards) for the base and handles, WAK The Cotton in Natural (approximately 75 yards) for the top color, and Drops Paris in White (approximately 175 yards) for the middle color. Drops Paris is noted as a worsted-weight cotton that provides excellent stability to the finished fabric. Total yardage requirements span approximately 450 yards across all three colors. The pattern calls for a 4.5 mm crochet hook for the main tote body and a 6 mm crochet hook for constructing the handles, along with a yarn needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level and Gauge
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple colors and post stitches. The pattern notes that gauge is a matter of personal preference, allowing crafters flexibility in achieving their desired finished size and fabric drape. This approach emphasizes that the tote's final dimensions and feel can be customized based on individual tension and hook choices.
