Product Description
A top down, comfortable summer pullover. Pattern notes include instructions for a pullover with, or without a hood as well as notes on creating a smaller, more decorative hood.
Top down raglan is knit flat, then joined for knitting in the round once the raglan shaping is completed. Sleeves are knit in the round. If knit without hood, sweater is seamless. Hood involves a small amount of seaming.
The sample shown was knit in Silky Wool, by Elsabeth Lavold. A substitute yarn is recommended below.

What is Being Made
Summer Sweet Corn is a knitted sweater designed by independent designer Melissa Schaschwary. This intermediate-level pullover features an optional hood construction and is sized to fit bust measurements ranging from 30 inches to 50 inches. The pattern offers versatility with the hood option, allowing knitters to create either a functional hooded sweater or a decorative hooded version by adjusting the hood length.
Knitting Techniques
The Summer Sweet Corn sweater employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for experienced beginners and intermediate knitters. The pattern begins with a Provisional Cast On, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless construction. The main body is worked in the round using circular knitting needles, which is an efficient method for creating seamless garments. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance. Stitch markers are employed throughout to help track pattern repeats and construction sections, with a dedicated Beginning of Round (BOR) marker to maintain orientation during circular knitting.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used in Summer Sweet Corn is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth V-pattern texture characteristic of classic knitted sweaters. This versatile stitch is achieved by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. Stockinette stitch is ideal for displaying yarn characteristics and drape, making it an excellent choice for a summer-weight garment.
Materials and Gauge
The pattern requires DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply), with the recommended yarn being Silky Wool by Elsabeth Lavold. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 900 yards for the smallest size (30-inch bust) to 1,728 yards for the largest size (50-inch bust). The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:
- US 7/4.5mm circular knitting needles in 36-inch length for initial hood construction
- US 7/4.5mm double-pointed needles (optional) for smaller circumferences
- US 5/3.75mm circular knitting needles in 48-inch length for body and ribbing
- US 5/3.75mm double-pointed needles (optional) for smaller circumferences
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) of stockinette stitch using US 7/4.5mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit and is achieved by adjusting needle size as needed. Additional notions required include 4 stitch markers plus 1 Beginning of Round marker, and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
Pattern Difficulty and Construction
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, Summer Sweet Corn is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle in-the-round construction and garment shaping. The pattern demonstrates professional design with multiple size options and construction flexibility, making it accessible to a range of body measurements while maintaining design integrity across all sizes.
