Product Description
This fun, fast summer socklet includes a few unusual twists. Use two contrasting yarns to make some color fun! Either use two solid yarns or sub one for a nearly-solid to get a bit of texture.
My test knitter decided she would like her colors reversed on the second sock. This pleases me, but the choice is yours!
The stripe accent yarn would be a great use for the leftovers from a previous pair!!!
The Square-Start Swirl toe is fun and easy. the afterthought heel is decreased in a swirl as well. The heel is more roomy than a lot of other afterthought heels out there. It looks unusual off of the foot, but the proof is in the wearing!!!
(Note, the purple sock was a prototype. Toe/cuff are just as specified in pattern. The pink sock has the swirl heel actually specified in the pattern.)
Errata: The version out between 6-16 and 6-18-10 indicated that the heel was to be knit from Contrast Color/CC. Version B, released 6/19, 1pm EDT, corrected this to MC.

What is Being Made
The Summer Striped Socklet is a pair of fun, quick-to-knit socks designed for warm weather wear. This pattern creates short, ribbed cuffs that are intentionally designed to be cool and comfortable without creeping into your shoe during wear. The socklets feature vibrant color stripes created by alternating between two contrasting yarn colors, with the option to reverse colors on the second sock for a creative, mismatched look.
Construction Method
These socklets are constructed using a toe-up approach, which means you begin knitting at the toe and work upward toward the cuff. This construction method is popular among sock knitters because it allows for precise fit adjustments and eliminates the need for grafting at the toe. The pattern features a distinctive swirl toe with square start, creating an interesting visual detail at the toe box. The heel is worked as an afterthought heel with an unusual, well-fitting shape, a technique that allows you to pick up stitches later and create a heel that fits comfortably without interrupting the main color pattern work.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Summer Striped Socklet employs several fundamental sock-knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters:
- Knitting in the round: The entire sock is worked circularly on double-pointed needles, creating a seamless, tubular fabric
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the foot and leg, creating a smooth, classic sock fabric
- Ribbing: Used for the short cuff to provide gentle elasticity and a finished appearance
- Color striping: Simple one-color-per-round technique that creates bold, horizontal stripes without the complexity of carrying multiple colors in a single round
- Swirl toe construction: A shaped toe technique that creates a visually interesting spiral effect
- Afterthought heel: A method where the heel is added after the main sock body is complete, allowing flexibility in heel placement and fit
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for two different contrasting colors of fingering-weight yarn, with each color requiring one 50-gram ball. Fingering-weight yarn, also called sock yarn, is the traditional choice for sock knitting due to its durability and appropriate thickness for creating well-fitting garments.
Needles required are US Size 1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) in a set of five. Double-pointed needles are the traditional tool for knitting socks in the round, though the pattern notes that needle size may be adjusted if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches per inch and 10 rounds per inch when working stockinette stitch in the round. This gauge is essential for achieving properly fitting socks.
The Summer Striped Socklet is available in five sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL, accommodating US shoe sizes 5 through 12. Finished sock foot lengths range from 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) for the smallest size to 11 inches (28 cm) for the largest. Finished sock foot circumferences range from approximately 7 inches (17.42 cm) to 9 inches (23.22 cm), ensuring a comfortable fit across the foot.
Pattern Features
This beginner-friendly pattern emphasizes fun and quick construction, making it ideal for knitters new to sock making or those seeking a satisfying project that can be completed relatively quickly. The use of only one yarn color per round simplifies the color work, eliminating the need to manage multiple colors simultaneously. The short, ribbed cuff design is specifically engineered for summer comfort, providing enough length to stay in place while remaining breathable and cool during warm weather.
