Product Description
A darling little top on its own, but for the brave, add some fun with tie-dye! It may sound scary to take something you have spent time on knitting and subjecting it to dye, but the results are worth every moment of anxiety. Besides, tie-dye is so trendy!! Don’t worry about “ruining” the sweater, is really is hard to make a mistake.
Being 100% cotton, Natura Just Cotton is the perfect choice for infants as it is soft to the touch and has the durability for frequent washing – not to mention, it’s great for dyeing!
A narrow lace hem adds charm to the simple Stocking Stitch top.
Summer Splash Knitted Infant Sweater by Sandi Prosser
Project Overview
Summer Splash is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed for infants, available in four sizes ranging from newborn (0-3 months) through 18 months. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a lightweight, breathable top perfect for warm weather wear. The design showcases a classic construction suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with multiple techniques and garment shaping.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted infant sweater with a crew neckline and button closure. The garment features a body worked in stockinette stitch with shaped armholes and sleeves. The sweater is designed to be worn as a summer layer or standalone piece for babies aged newborn through approximately 18 months old.
Sizing and Measurements
- Infant 0-3 months: Chest 19" [48 cm], Length 10½" [26.5 cm]
- Infant 3-6 months: Chest 21" [53.5 cm], Length 11¼" [28.5 cm]
- Infant 6-12 months: Chest 22½" [57 cm], Length 12" [30.5 cm] (model shown size)
- Infant 18 months: Chest 24" [61 cm], Length 13½" [34.5 cm]
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate pattern employs several essential knitting techniques. Knitters will work with both straight and circular needles, requiring familiarity with switching between needle types. The pattern includes decreasing techniques such as the S2KP (slip 2 stitches together, knit 1, pass 2 slip stitches over knit 1), which decreases 2 stitches in a single operation for shaping armholes and necklines. Stitch markers and stitch holders are used throughout to track pattern sections and hold stitches during construction. The sweater is worked in pieces and then seamed together, a standard method for fitted garments.
An optional tie-dyeing technique is available for finishing, allowing crafters to customize the sweater with multiple colors using Rit® All Purpose Liquid Dye in colors such as purple, fuchsia, and aquamarine. This finishing method is entirely optional and does not affect the core knitting construction.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the sweater body and sleeves, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This creates the smooth, classic fabric typical of fitted sweaters.
- S2KP (Slip 2 Knit Pass): A double decrease stitch used for shaping, particularly in armhole and neckline decreases where two stitches must be eliminated while maintaining pattern integrity.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for DMC Natura Just Cotton, a 100% cotton yarn in color #N01 Ibiza (a light neutral shade ideal for summer). The yarn is a sport weight (also referenced as 4-ply in weight categories), providing a lightweight fabric suitable for warm weather. Yardage requirements are modest: 2 balls for the smallest size (0-3 months) and 3 balls for the largest size (18 months), with each ball containing 1.75 oz [50g] and 170 yards [155 meters]. The cotton fiber content makes this an excellent choice for breathability and comfort against delicate infant skin.
