Summer Slippers Felted Knit for Women

What is Being Made

These are felted knit slippers designed for women, created by Monique Rae Designs. The slippers feature a toe-covering design with a low back and open sides, making them a comfortable footwear option suitable for indoor wear. The pattern includes sizing options ranging from size 5/6 through size 10/11, allowing for a customized fit across multiple women's shoe sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Summer Slippers pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to construct the slipper structure:

  • Make One (M1) increases: Used strategically in the early rows to expand the stitch count and create the initial width of the slipper foot
  • Knit two together (K2tog) decreases: Applied during the arch and heel shaping sections to reduce stitches and form the contoured sole
  • Flat knitting: The slippers are knit flat rather than in the round, which simplifies construction for intermediate-level knitters
  • Sewing: Assembly requires sewing to join sections and complete the three-dimensional slipper form
  • Felting: The finished knit pieces are felted, a process that shrinks and densifies the wool fabric to create a durable, non-slip sole and structured slipper body

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters:

  • Knit stitch (k): Forms the primary fabric throughout most rows
  • Make one (m1): Creates new stitches for shaping the slipper width
  • Knit two together (k2tog): Decreases stitches to shape the arch and heel areas

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for 100% worsted weight wool yarn in aran weight, worked using two strands held together. This doubled-strand construction creates a thicker fabric suitable for felting and provides the necessary density for a durable slipper sole. The worsted and aran weight classifications ensure the yarn has sufficient body to withstand the felting process while maintaining stitch definition.

Pattern Features and Sizing

The pattern accommodates six different slipper sizes with a color-coded system to guide knitters through size-specific row counts. Section 2 contains the sole expansion rows, which vary by size: size 5/6 requires rows 13-21, while the largest size 10/11 extends through row 41. This graduated approach allows the sole to reach the appropriate length and width for each shoe size. Section 3 focuses on arch and heel shaping to complete the slipper form. The pattern notes that left and right slippers are knit identically, simplifying the construction process. Additional guidance includes both wide and narrow sole instructions, providing customization options for different foot shapes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable with basic increases, decreases, and sewing techniques. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and flat knitting construction make it accessible, while the sizing variations and felting process add moderate complexity.
