Product Description

Cute hot pants and t shirt combo for Summer Days! Will fit your 12" Blythe, Madeline dolls and Makie dolls.

The hotpants are knit from 4 ply (UK) yarn and the t shirt from laceweight wool and mohair.

I do not have a gauge for this pattern but I do knit a little loose so if you are a tight knitter you could try going up a needle size to get the right tension.

Summer Days Hot Pants and T Shirt for 12" Blythe

Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern by Polly creates a complete summer outfit for 12-inch Blythe dolls, featuring coordinating hot pants and a t-shirt. The designs utilize contrasting yarn weights and fiber types to achieve different aesthetic effects—sturdy sport weight yarn for structured hot pants and delicate laceweight yarn for an airy t-shirt.

Hot Pants Construction

The hot pants are knitted from the top down using a strategic construction method that begins with two independent straps. These straps serve as the waistband anchors and are worked separately before being joined together to form the main body of the garment.

Strap Foundation: Each strap is cast on with 3 stitches and worked in garter stitch—the simplest knit stitch created by knitting every row—until reaching 9 centimeters in length. The pattern instructs knitters to leave a long tail during the initial cast-on, which will later be used to create a button loop for fastening.

Body Assembly: Once both straps are complete, stitches from each strap are picked up and combined with newly cast-on stitches to form the waistband. The pattern then progresses through a series of increases to shape the hip area. A significant increase is worked by knitting into the front and back of every stitch (abbreviated as Kfb), which doubles the stitch count from 23 to 46 stitches. This rapid expansion creates the fullness needed for the leg openings.

Stitch Pattern Detail: After the major increases, the pattern establishes a textured stitch arrangement alternating between purl and knit stitches in specific sequences. This creates visual interest and helps define the structure of the garment.

T-Shirt Design

The t-shirt component uses laceweight wool and mohair yarn, creating a delicate, lightweight garment suitable for the summer theme. The laceweight fiber produces an airy fabric with excellent drape, making it ideal for doll-scale clothing.

Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques accessible to intermediate knitters:

  • Stocking Stitch (SS): The foundation stitch used throughout, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, uniform fabric
  • Garter Stitch: Used for the hot pants straps, created by knitting every row for a textured, reversible fabric
  • Kfb Increase: A method of increasing by one stitch by knitting into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
  • K2tog Decrease: A right-leaning decrease created by knitting two stitches together as one
  • Horizontal Strand Increases: An invisible increase method worked by knitting into the horizontal strand running between stitches on the needles and knitting into the back of the loop

Materials and Tools

The pattern requires two needle sizes to accommodate the different yarn weights: 2.5mm needles for the hot pants and 2mm needles for the t-shirt. The hot pants are worked in 4ply yarn (known as sport weight in US terminology), while the t-shirt uses laceweight wool and mohair yarn. Small buttons are needed to complete the waistband fastening system on the hot pants.

Pattern Characteristics

This design demonstrates thoughtful construction planning, with the strap-based waistband providing both structural support and a realistic closure mechanism for doll clothing. The progression from narrow straps to a significantly expanded hip area through strategic increases shows understanding of garment shaping at miniature scale. The combination of sturdy sport weight yarn for the hot pants and delicate laceweight for the t-shirt creates visual and textural contrast within the coordinated set.
