Product Description

The shawl starts at the center top and it’s shaped with increases: one increase at each top edge on every row and one increase before and after the 3-stitch garter center panel on every right side row. The main textured fabric is designed with columns of crossed stitches. This soft texture is crossed by three elongation stripes (formed by long stitches). The twisted stitches and triangles of the border finish the shawl in such a lovely way.

Suiren Knit Shawl by Tête Bêche Designs

What Is Being Made

Suiren is a knitted shawl designed by Orlane Sucche for Tête Bêche Designs. This is a lightweight, wearable shawl intended to provide layering warmth for summer dressing, making it an ideal accessory to pair with sleeveless dresses and for use in air-conditioned or cool evening environments. The shawl is worked in fingering weight yarn and is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, including beginners.

Yarn and Materials

Suiren requires approximately 785 yards (720 meters) of fingering weight yarn, which equates to roughly 2 skeins of Miss Babs Northumbria Fingering. The recommended yarn is 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, available in 437-yard (400-meter) skeins weighing 100 grams. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted in a solid hand-dyed color. Knitting needles required are US size 5 (3.75 mm) in a 32-inch (80-centimeter) circular needle configuration.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-friendly shawl pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques that build foundational skills while creating an elegant finished garment. The stitch guide includes the following techniques:

  • M1 (Make One) Increase: An open bar increase worked by inserting the right needle under the horizontal bar between stitches on the right and left needles from front to back, wrapping yarn under and over the right needle, then pulling a loop through the picked-up strand to create a new stitch. This technique is commonly used in shawl construction to create gradual, evenly distributed increases.
  • Cross 2 R (Right Crossed Stitches): A decorative crossing technique executed by knitting the second stitch while moving the needle around the first stitch, then knitting the first stitch in a standard manner. This creates a twisted, crossed appearance in the fabric.

The pattern uses these techniques to construct the shawl shape and add visual interest to the finished piece. The combination of increases and crossed stitches creates a balanced, wearable design suitable for warm-weather layering.

Suiren is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Tête Bêche Designs, making it immediately accessible for digital download and printing.
