Product Description
Cables on front and back are surrounded by seed rib for an easy to work textured cardigan with loads of class. The amazing wool used for this cardigan is perfect for making the texture of the stitches really stand out. The body is worked in one piece to the armholes, then divided to work the fronts and back separately. Shoulders are shaped using short-rows, then joined using 3-Needle Bind-Off. Front neck shaping takes place by decreasing between the cables and the rest of the front so they move toward the armholes, and meet the back cables at the shoulders. Sleeves are worked in the round in seed rib to the armhole, then the sleeve cap worked back and forth.
A wide band of k2, p2 rib completes the front and neck edges. Add three special buttons just below the beginning of the V-neck to finish things off.
Studio Cardigan by Therese Chynoweth
What Is Being Made
The Studio Cardigan is a classic long-sleeve V-neck cardigan designed by Therese Chynoweth as a versatile, standard-fitting layering piece. Available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, this intermediate-level knitting project produces a refined garment with finished bust measurements from 34½" to 58¾" [87.5 to 149 cm]. The cardigan features a 1½" [4 cm] overlap at the front closure and lengths ranging from 25½" to 28½" [65 to 72.5 cm] depending on size selection. This design is suitable for knitters with intermediate experience and creates a polished, professional-looking cardigan appropriate for everyday wear or professional settings.
Yarn and Materials
The Studio Cardigan is knitted using worsted weight yarn (Medium #4), with yardage requirements varying by size from 1011 yards [924 m] for the smallest size to 1659 yards [1517 m] for the largest size. The pattern is shown in Berroco Bento, a blend of 80% superwash merino wool and 20% silk that provides both durability and a subtle sheen. This yarn composition yields approximately 98 yards [90 m] per 1¾ oz [50 g] ball, requiring 11 to 18 balls depending on the chosen size. The superwash merino content makes the finished cardigan easy to care for, while the silk adds a refined appearance and drape.
Needles and Tools
Construction of the Studio Cardigan requires US 8 [5 mm] circular needles in two lengths: a 16" [40 cm] circular needle for working smaller circumferences such as necklines and cuffs, and a 32" [80 cm] circular needle for working the body. Additionally, a set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles in the same size is needed for sections worked in the round. Circular needles are used throughout this pattern, allowing for seamless or nearly seamless construction and the flexibility to work flat or in the round as the design requires.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
As an intermediate-level project, the Studio Cardigan employs standard cardigan construction techniques appropriate for knitters with foundational skills. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes provided in parentheses, streamlining the instructions while maintaining clarity. The V-neck shaping and button band construction are key technical elements that define this design. The cardigan's standard fit is achieved through graduated sizing, with the pattern recommending selecting a size with 2"–4" [5–10 cm] positive ease for comfortable wear. The use of circular needles throughout allows for efficient working and reduces the need for seaming, a hallmark of modern cardigan design.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch pattern details are not fully provided in the available pattern excerpt, the Studio Cardigan appears to utilize fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for worsted weight yarn and intermediate skill levels. The construction method using circular needles suggests the pattern likely incorporates techniques such as working in stockinette stitch for the main fabric, with ribbed edgings at the cuffs, hem, and button bands to provide structure and a finished appearance. The V-neck shaping and button band finishing are integral design elements that require attention to stitch counts and decreasing or increasing techniques to achieve the intended garment proportions.
