Product Description
On a recent trip to the Scottish Highlands, my husband and I hiked to the lookout at the top of Struie Hill. Bordered by rolling slopes of purple heather and feathery ferns, the rocky path led to a breathtaking view of Dornoch Firth. These mitts remind me of that wonderful view: the winding path, the purple sides of Struie Hill, and the jewel-like waters of Dornoch Firth, home to salmon, seals, and even dolphins!
Worked wrist to fingers, this pattern features a cable and lace motif that is maintained across the back of the wrist and hand from start to finish. On the palm side, a garter strip borders a simple ribbing that is also continued from wrist to fingers and provides a stretchy, versatile fit. The upper portion of the thumb is worked last. Two top cuff lengths (short and long) are included in the instructions. The wrist cuff length can be altered by adding or subtracting a pattern rep before starting the thumb gusset.
BONUS Round Tracker Checklist included!

Struie Hill Fingerless Mitts by Barb @ Woollyside
What Is Being Made
The Struie Hill Fingerless Mitts are a pair of knitted fingerless mittens inspired by a hiking experience in the Scottish Highlands. These mitts feature an open-finger design that allows full dexterity while providing warmth to the hands and wrists. The design captures the visual essence of Struie Hill's landscape, incorporating color work and stitch patterns that evoke the rolling purple heather slopes, feathery ferns, and the jewel-like waters of Dornoch Firth. The pattern offers two length options: a shorter version measuring 7.5 inches total length, and a longer variant, providing versatility for different style preferences and seasonal needs.
Techniques Used
This advanced-level knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques to create its finished design. The mitts are constructed using circular knitting on double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless, tubular construction around the hand. The pattern incorporates color work elements that reference the Scottish landscape, requiring knitters to manage multiple yarn colors within rounds. Gauge management is critical to this project, as the finished circumference must precisely fit hand measurements around the knuckles. The pattern also involves shaping and decreasing to create the proper fit around the hand and wrist, and knitters must work with two different needle sizes to achieve the correct gauge and fabric characteristics.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked in the round on double-pointed needles. The project requires proficiency with knit and purl stitches as the foundation, combined with color work techniques to create the landscape-inspired pattern. The advanced difficulty rating indicates the inclusion of more complex stitch work, likely incorporating stranded colorwork or similar techniques to achieve the visual representation of Struie Hill's terrain. Decreases are employed to shape the mitts appropriately for hand and wrist fit.
Materials
- Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in worsted weight (light worsted classification), composed of 100% superwash merino wool with 210 yards per 100-gram skein. One skein is required, available in color options Indiecita or Kris
- Needles: U.S. size 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles in a set of 5, and U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles in a set of 5
- Additional Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Finished Measurements
The Struie Hill Fingerless Mitts are available in two length options. The Short version features a circumference of 6.33 inches (16 cm) to fit hand circumferences of 6.5 to 8 inches (16.5 to 20 cm) around the knuckles, with a total length of 7.5 inches (19 cm). The Long version maintains the same 6.33-inch circumference but extends to a greater total length for extended wrist coverage.
Yarn Weight Compatibility
This pattern is designed to work with DK and worsted weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended gauge and fabric characteristics. The specified Malabrigo Rios yarn falls within the worsted weight category, though the pattern's compatibility with DK weight provides an alternative option for knitters seeking a lighter, more delicate fabric or those working with different yarn stashes.
