What is Being Made

The Stripy Cardigan is a knitted button-front cardigan designed in six sizes to fit bust measurements from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic cardigan silhouette with horizontal stripes and a structured fit, featuring a length to shoulder shaping ranging from 58 to 64 cm depending on size, and sleeve lengths from 43 to 46 cm.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This cardigan is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern employs stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, refined surface ideal for displaying the horizontal stripe pattern. The design incorporates button bands and shoulder shaping to create a tailored garment that drapes properly across the bust and shoulders. The cardigan includes sleeve cap shaping to ensure proper sleeve fit and movement at the armhole.

Stitches Used

• Stockinette stitch (st st) — the primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, worked over 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm (4 inches) for proper fabric density and drape
• Ribbing — used for cuffs, waistband, and button bands to create elasticity and structure at garment edges
• Stripes — horizontal color changes worked in stockinette stitch using three coordinating yarn shades

Materials and Yarn

The Stripy Cardigan is designed using Rico Essentials Merino DK, a double-knit weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. Each 50g ball yields 120 metres (109 yards). The pattern calls for three coordinating shades: Shade A Nude (5-7 balls depending on size), Shade B Pearl Pink (5-7 balls depending on size), and Shade C Elder (1-3 balls for accent stripes). Total yarn requirements range from approximately 900 to 1,400 metres depending on the chosen size.

The project requires two pairs of knitting needles: 3.25 mm (UK 10, US 3) needles for ribbed edgings and 4 mm (UK 8, US 6) needles for the main fabric worked in stockinette stitch. Additional notions include one stitch holder for managing stitches during construction and seven buttons for the front closure.

The Stripy Cardigan offers six size options with actual bust measurements ranging from 94 cm (37¼ inches) to 150 cm (59¼ inches), providing positive ease for comfortable wear. The length to shoulder shaping varies by size from 58 to 64 cm, and sleeve lengths range from 43 to 46 cm, allowing for customization based on individual proportions and preferred fit.
