Product Description

Just 1 skein of sock yarn makes this perfect summer shawl! The flattering trapezoid shape features garter stitch sides with pointy ends for tying, while an airy, textured lace pattern covers your back.

The shawl is knit sideways - start with 5 stitches, end with 5 stitches. You will never have more than 100 stitches on your needles.

The lace stitch is an easily memorizable, 4 stitch/4 row repeat, with 2 of the rows knit straight as "rest" rows. In fact, there's no purling whatsover in this design! You won't need to carry along a complicated chart while you're knitting either - the lace pattern alternates just 2 types of stitches.

The shawl is completely reversible and measures approximately 57" at its longest width by 18" high after blocking. Any fingering weight yarn can be used in this pattern (it uses approximately 420 yards at gauge), and both variegated and solid colors work wonderfully.

The shawl's size easily can be adjusted by knitting a greater or l

What is Being Made

The Strawberry Canyon Shawl is an advanced-level knitted trapezoid shawl designed by Valerie Oliner (knittervee on Ravelry). This downloadable PDF pattern creates a generous, wearable shawl with elegant proportions. After blocking, the finished shawl measures 57 inches across the top width and 20 inches at the bottom width, standing 18 inches high with a 28-inch diagonal wingspan on each side. The trapezoid shape makes this shawl versatile for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a wrap.

Techniques Used

This advanced knitting project employs several core techniques essential to shawl construction. The pattern utilizes increases to shape the trapezoid form, achieved through knit front and back (k f&b) stitches that add stitches strategically throughout the design. Decreases are incorporated using knit two together (k2tog) and knit three together (k3tog) techniques to create shaping and stitch management. The shawl is worked in garter stitch, the foundational knit structure that creates the characteristic textured fabric. Blocking is an essential finishing technique that sets the final measurements and enhances the shawl's drape and appearance.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming garter stitch fabric
  • Knit front and back (k f&b) – an increase technique that creates one additional stitch
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease reducing one stitch
  • Knit three together (k3tog) – a decrease technique combining three stitches into one

Materials and Tools

The Strawberry Canyon Shawl pattern calls for Pretty Purly 4 ply Sock yarn in color PP04, composed of 100% organic merino fiber. One skein provides 437 yards (400 meters) per 100 grams in Fingering weight (#1), though the shawl shown in the pattern used 419.5 yards, leaving minimal yardage to spare. Knitting is worked on US 8 (5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches, which accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands. Additional tools include stitch markers (optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats) and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends after completion.

Gauge and Customization

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in garter stitch when unblocked. While correct gauge is not essential for this design, variations in gauge will affect the final measurements of the completed shawl. Knitters working at a tighter gauge will produce a smaller finished piece, while those working at a looser gauge will create a larger shawl. This flexibility allows for some customization based on individual knitting tension and desired finished size.
