Product Description
Stravaig is a Scots word meaning to wander, these socks feature a lace pattern with a zigzagging path wandering from side to side up the side of the socks from toe to cuff. Knit from the toe up with a gusset and heel flap, with a delicate lace pattern on each sock, these socks are the perfect mix of relaxing knit and engaging pattern.
The pattern is fully written and the lace is also charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. You will also need to know how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and a stretchy bind off like Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.

What Is Being Made
Stravaig socks are a pair of knitted socks inspired by the Scots word meaning to wander. The design features a distinctive lace pattern with a zigzagging path that meanders from side to side, traveling up the leg of each sock from toe to cuff. These socks offer a balanced knitting experience, combining relaxing stockinette sections with an engaging lace motif that keeps knitters interested throughout the project. The finished socks are available in four sizes: Small (17.5 cm / 7" circumference), Medium (20 cm / 8" circumference), Large (22.5 cm / 9" circumference), and Extra Large (25 cm / 10" circumference).
Knitting Techniques Used
Stravaig employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that make this project suitable for knitters with some experience. The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, which allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and adjust the leg length to their preference. The construction includes a gusset, which adds shaping and comfort around the foot, and a heel flap, a traditional heel construction method that creates durability in a high-wear area. The lace pattern requires attention to yarn overs and decreases, making this an engaging project that balances straightforward knitting with decorative colorwork elements.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The primary stitch used throughout most of the sock is stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for socks. The lace pattern features yarn overs and strategic decreases that create the characteristic zigzagging path design. These lace stitches are worked on each sock and require careful attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats. The pattern uses stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction sections, making the intermediate-difficulty project more manageable.
Materials and Tools Required
Stravaig is designed to be knit with 400 meters (437 yards) of Bluebell Yarns Corriedale 32 stitches, a 4-ply weight yarn in the colorway Violet Shadows. This yarn is 100% Falkland Corriedale wool with no nylon content, offering a soft, natural fiber choice. The gauge is 32 stitches and 44 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch when worked in the round. Knitters will need 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters (32") or longer, or alternatively can use double-pointed needles (DPNs) or their preferred method for knitting in the round. Additional supplies include four stitch markers per sock, a cable needle (optional), a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and sock blockers (optional) for finishing. The socks are designed to be worn with up to 0 to 2.5 centimeters (0 to 1 inch) of negative ease for a snug, comfortable fit.
