Product Description

The Strata Bag is a contemporary design that is easy to crochet and is a great introduction to crochet bags.

Strata is crocheted in rows to create just one piece of fabric that is then slip stitched together. A sewn lining can be added (not essential) to bring more structure and stability, and you can add whichever handles you prefer.

The same pattern is used whether you are working with a aran or chunky weight yarn. Using aran weight will create a standard handbag size, while chunky creates an over-sized bag that can carry a laptop.

Aran Weight: 100g/ 154m/ 168yds; Sample used 300g/ 462m/ 505yds

Chunky weight 100g/ 104m/ 113yds. Sample used 550g/ 572m/ 626yds

Strata Bag by Fay Dashper-Hughes

Project Overview

The Strata Bag is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Fay Dashper-Hughes that creates a structured handbag through an innovative single-piece construction method. This downloadable PDF pattern offers flexibility in finished size and capacity by providing instructions for two yarn weight options: aran weight for a standard handbag size, or chunky weight for an oversized bag suitable for carrying a laptop.

Construction Technique

The Strata Bag features a distinctive construction approach that sets it apart from typical crochet bag patterns. Rather than working in the round or assembling multiple pieces, this bag is crocheted in rows to create a single continuous piece of fabric. Once the crocheting is complete, the fabric is slip stitched together to form the bag structure. This method creates clean, intentional seams while maintaining design integrity throughout the piece.

Stitch Pattern and Techniques

The Strata Bag employs a simple yet effective two-row repeat pattern that combines two primary stitches:

  • Herringbone half trebles – These stitches create a textured, visually interesting surface with a distinctive diagonal appearance reminiscent of herringbone brickwork
  • Double slip stitches – Used strategically within the repeat to add structure and definition to the pattern

This straightforward stitch combination allows intermediate crocheters to complete the project efficiently while achieving professional results. The herringbone texture adds visual depth and interest to the finished bag.

Yarn Weight Options and Finished Sizing

The pattern accommodates two distinct yarn weights, each producing different bag dimensions and capacity:

  • Aran Weight Option: Uses 300g of yarn (462 meters / 505 yards) and requires a 4mm hook (US G/6). This creates a standard handbag size suitable for everyday use
  • Chunky Weight Option: Uses 550g of yarn (572 meters / 626 yards) and requires a 5mm hook (US H/8). This produces an oversized bag with capacity for larger items such as laptops

Both options use the identical stitch pattern, making it easy for crocheters to choose their preferred finished size and capacity.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern sample was created using WoolyKnit Aran Weight Cone in 100% British wool. The sample bag was worked in the shade 'Rust Tan' and required 300g of yarn from the 400g cone size. Aran weight yarn provides a balanced thickness that works well with the 4mm hook, creating fabric with good drape and structure suitable for bag construction.

Finishing Options

While the crocheted construction provides the primary structure, the pattern accommodates optional finishing techniques. A sewn lining can be added to bring additional structure and stability to the completed bag. Crocheters also have the flexibility to select and attach their preferred handles, allowing for personalization based on aesthetic preferences and functional needs.

Skill Level and Project Scope

Classified as an intermediate-level project, the Strata Bag is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills in basic stitches and construction techniques. The straightforward two-row repeat stitch pattern ensures the project moves along quickly, making it an approachable intermediate challenge that yields a professional, functional finished piece.
