What is Being Made
The Stay Cozy Cowl is a versatile knitted neck accessory designed as a one-size-fits-all cowl. This piece features finished measurements of 47 inches in circumference and 9 inches in width, making it an ideal layering piece for cooler weather. The cowl is constructed by working flat and then seaming the ends together, creating a seamless loop for comfortable wear around the neck.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters new to the craft. The cowl is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which simplifies the construction process for newer knitters. The piece is then seamed at the end using a tapestry needle to join the edges together. The pattern incorporates color work opportunities, allowing knitters to switch yarn colors throughout different sections of the design. The designer provides flexibility by suggesting that knitters can add length to the cowl by repeating sections A, B, or C as desired, and color changes can be made at any point during construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Stay Cozy Cowl is primarily constructed using stockinette stitch, the foundational stitch pattern for this design. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side. The gauge for this pattern is 14 stitches and 18 rows per 4 inches when worked in stockinette and properly blocked, providing a standard reference point for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Stay Cozy Cowl is designed to accommodate flexible yarn options, making it adaptable to various stash yarns and preferences. Knitters can choose between two yardage combinations: 50 grams of fingering weight yarn paired with 100 grams of DK weight yarn, or approximately 240 yards total of DK weight yarn, or 240 yards of fingering weight yarn. The sample cowl was knitted using Knit Picks Stroll in Dove Heather, a 75/25 superwash merino and nylon blend in 50-gram skeins, combined with Campfibres Yarns DK in 100% BFL fiber and Madelinetosh DK in the OOAK colorway. Construction requires US 10 / 6.00 mm needles and a tapestry needle for seaming. The yarn weight classification of 4-ply makes this pattern accessible for creating a fabric with good drape and wearability.
Additional Notions
- One tapestry needle for seaming the cowl ends together
