Product Description
This hat was used in a workshop in my shop. It works up into an attractive quilted appearance with beads at the intersections. We found that working to gauge is of monumental importance. You can use a size 1 for the ribbing, if you'd like the hat to fit a little tighter. The beads are strung on before knitting. This is a great beginner bead knitting project - not too difficult, but more challenge than a plain hat. You will need to know how to knit in the round.
Silk & Silver is really cool yarn! The yarn is a blend of wool, silk, and yes, actual sterling silver (no, it won't tarnish). It is available in pretty colors as well as black and off white. I am available for knitting help through e-mail.
Starry Night Beaded Hat by Sharon Mooney
What is Being Made
The Starry Night Hat (K340) is a knitted beaded hat designed to fit large children through adults with head circumferences up to 23 inches. This intermediate-level knitting project combines traditional hat construction with decorative beadwork, creating a sophisticated accessory that features metallic accents integrated throughout the design.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the hat. The project begins with a cast-on foundation and uses stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing using knit 2 together (K2tog) and purl 2 together (P2tog) decreases, which reduce stitch counts to form the crown of the hat. The pattern is worked in the round using circular knitting needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction. Stitch markers are placed to help track pattern repeats and shaping decreases throughout the rounds.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The hat utilizes essential knitting stitches including knit (K) and purl (P) stitches to build the fabric structure. Decreases are worked using K2tog (knit 2 stitches together) to reduce stitches and shape the hat crown. The stockinette stitch base provides a smooth, classic fabric surface that showcases the beaded embellishments. The pattern works at a gauge of 8 stitches and 10 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch on circular needles, ensuring proper fit and drape.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Starry Night Hat requires approximately one skein of Kraemer "Sterling Silk & Silver" yarn in the Tuxedo colorway. This luxury yarn blend contains 63% Superwash Merino wool, 20% silk, 15% nylon, and 2% silver thread, providing both durability and lustrous sheen. The yarn is classified as 4-ply weight with 420 yards per 3.5 ounces, offering excellent stitch definition and drape.
Needles and Tools Required
- Set of four size US 2 double-pointed knitting needles for working the crown decreases
- 16-inch size US 2 circular knitting needles for the main hat body
- Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping
- Darice "EasyEye" beading needle (#1144-26) or a tapestry needle with an eye large enough to accommodate the beads
- Yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends
Beading Component
The hat incorporates approximately 150 beads in 6/0 size, which are integrated into the knitted fabric to create the starry night effect. The beads are applied using a beading needle, adding dimensional sparkle and visual interest to the finished hat. The silver content in the yarn coordinates with the beadwork to enhance the celestial theme.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Starry Night Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to advance to circular needle work and beading integration. The combination of in-the-round knitting, crown shaping with decreases, and bead application requires attention to detail and familiarity with multiple techniques, making it an ideal project for developing knitters seeking to expand their skill set.
