Stained Glass Mandala Potholder: Overlay Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Stained Glass Mandala Potholder is a decorative and functional kitchen accessory designed by LillaBjörnCrochet (Tatsiana Kupryianchyk). This original crochet pattern creates a mandala-inspired potholder featuring intricate stained glass-like visual effects. The finished piece serves dual purposes: it functions as a practical potholder for kitchen use, and when not in use, it can be displayed as wall décor, making it a versatile addition to any table setting or home interior.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs overlay crochet as its primary technique, combined with elements of tapestry crochet to achieve the distinctive stained glass appearance. Overlay crochet allows crafters to layer stitches and color changes in a way that creates dimensional, intricate patterns reminiscent of stained glass designs. The integration of tapestry crochet elements adds depth and visual complexity to the mandala motif, enabling the creation of detailed color work without frequent yarn cutting and weaving.

The specific stitches used in this pattern work together to build the mandala structure and create clean color transitions that enhance the stained glass effect.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This potholder requires sport weight yarn in five distinct colors:

  • Cream
  • Pink
  • Beige
  • Grey
  • Purple
  • Dark blue

The designer used Catania by Schachenmayr, a 5-ply yarn with specifications of 50g/1.76 oz. per ball and 125 m/137 yards per ball. This yarn choice provides excellent stitch definition, which is essential for the clarity and visual impact of the overlay crochet technique.

A 2.75 mm (C) crochet hook is recommended, though crafters should select the hook size that produces an acceptable gauge for their individual tension. Additional materials include scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more advanced color work techniques. The overlay crochet method requires attention to detail and understanding of how to manage multiple yarn colors throughout the project, but the detailed pattern guidance supports crafters in achieving professional-looking results.

Design Inspiration and Finished Appearance

The mandala design draws inspiration from traditional stained glass artistry, translating the geometric beauty and color blocking characteristic of stained glass windows into a crocheted textile format. The use of five coordinating colors—cream, pink, beige, grey, purple, and dark blue—creates a sophisticated palette that evokes the luminous quality of colored glass while remaining versatile enough to complement various kitchen décors and home styles.
