Product Description

I designed a super soft cushion cover with 4 large squares on each side. It's so soft and squishy because I used Merino Soft Brush, a recent yarn in Scheepjes' Merino Soft line. It has little flecks both dark and light brushed through the main colour. It's 50% Superwash merino wool, 25% microfibre and 25% acrylic and comes in 50g/105m balls and it's suitable for 4 to 5mm hooks. For this cushion I used a 4mm hook.

The pillow measures 45 x 45cm / 18 x 18in and as you can see in the pictures, I alternated the colours. I think I like the colour order in the first pic best but I always like to make two different sides when making a cushion cover. Each individual square measures 23 x 23cm / 9.2 x 9.2in

Enjoy!

Project Overview

The Squishy Popcorn Cushion Cover is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a textured, decorative cushion cover measuring 45 x 45cm (17.7 x 17.7 inches). This design features a distinctive popcorn stitch texture that creates a squishy, three-dimensional surface perfect for adding comfort and visual interest to home décor. The project is ideal for crafters new to crochet who want to learn fundamental techniques while creating a practical, finished piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a complete cushion cover constructed from crocheted squares that are assembled together. The finished cushion cover is designed to fit a 40 x 40cm cushion inner, making it a functional home accessory. The cover features a textured popcorn stitch pattern that gives the fabric a bumpy, squishy tactile quality, distinguishing it from smooth crochet fabrics.

Construction Method

The cushion cover is built using modular square construction. Individual squares measuring 23 x 23cm (9.2 x 9.2 inches) are crocheted separately and then assembled together to form the complete cover. This approach breaks the project into manageable sections, making it accessible for beginners and allowing for flexibility in color placement and design.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Popcorn Stitches: The primary decorative technique featuring clusters of stitches that are pulled tight to create dimensional bumps across the fabric surface
  • Double Crochet Clusters: Used for structural elements and texture variation throughout the pattern
  • Treble Crochet Clusters: Incorporated for additional textural depth and visual interest
  • Square Assembly: Individual squares are joined together using standard crochet joining techniques to create the final cushion cover

Stitches Used

This pattern utilizes specialized cluster and popcorn stitch variations to achieve its distinctive texture:

  • 2dc-cl (2 double crochet cluster): A cluster consisting of 2 double crochet stitches worked together
  • beg 2dc-cl (beginning 2 double crochet cluster): The starting version of the 2 double crochet cluster
  • 2tr-cl (2 treble crochet cluster): A cluster made from 2 treble crochet stitches
  • beg 2tr-cl (beginning 2 treble crochet cluster): The initial treble cluster variation
  • 5trc-popcorn: A popcorn stitch consisting of 5 triple crochet stitches pulled tight to create a dimensional bump
  • 5dtr-popcorn: A popcorn stitch made from 5 double treble crochet stitches for larger, more pronounced texture

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Scheepjes Merino Soft Brush yarn, a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Microfibre, and 25% Acrylic. This composition provides durability, softness, and easy care. Three colors are used in the design:

  • Yarn A (257 Van Der Leck): Cream color, 3 balls (50g/105m each)
  • Yarn B (254 Israëls): Aqua blue color, 3 balls (50g/105m each)
  • Yarn C (255 Breitner): Mint green color, 3 balls (50g/105m each)

Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn provides a medium thickness ideal for creating defined popcorn stitches and a firm, structured fabric.

Tools Required: A 4mm crochet hook is used throughout the project, and a tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the squares. A 40 x 40cm cushion inner is required to complete the finished project.

Gauge and Fabric Characteristics

While gauge and tension are noted as not critical for this particular project, working with a firm fabric tension produces the best results. A firm fabric ensures that
