This is a cropped sweater that can easily be made longer to your desired length. It uses Worsted Weight yarns by O-Wool in O-Wash Worsted as the main color and Dream State by Spincycle Yarns which gives it that one-of-a-kind color combination.

Squared Sweater by Vibrant Viking

What is Being Made

The Squared Sweater is a knitted pullover design created by Ann Iverson of Vibrant Viking. This intermediate-level garment features a distinctive yoke construction with geometric square motifs that originate at the neckline and travel downward along the sleeves, gradually decreasing in size as they descend. The sweater is part of the first release in a three-part MesoAmerican Inspired Collection, reflecting cultural design influences in its patterning approach.

Sizing and Fit

The Squared Sweater is offered in multiple sizes to accommodate various body measurements:

  • Neck circumference ranges from 15.6 inches (39.6 cm) to 18.2 inches (46.2 cm)
  • Upper arm circumference spans from 10.9 inches (27.7 cm) to 18.9 inches (48 cm)
  • Sleeve length is a consistent 19 inches (48.3 cm) across all sizes
  • Sleeve cuff circumference ranges from 8 inches (20.3 cm) to 9 inches (22.9 cm)
  • Body length from underarm to hem measures 10 inches (25.4 cm)

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This design employs a yoke construction method, a popular technique in modern knitting where the entire upper portion of the sweater—including the neckline, shoulders, and upper sleeves—is worked as one integrated piece. The geometric square pattern is strategically positioned to begin at the yoke and descend along the sleeves, creating a visual tapering effect as the squares reduce in scale. This construction approach allows for seamless integration of the colorwork or textural elements with the garment's shaping.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations, the square motif pattern suggests the use of colorwork knitting or textured knitting techniques to create the geometric designs. The yoke-down construction typically employs standard knit and purl stitches combined with strategic increases to shape the garment from the neckline outward and downward.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Squared Sweater pattern accommodates multiple yarn options, providing flexibility for knitters:

  • O-Wool O-Wash Worsted: 100% machine-washable certified organic merino wool, offering 179 yards per 163 meters per 3.5 ounces (100 grams). This yarn provides a sustainable, easy-care option suitable for everyday wear.
  • Spincycle Yarns Dream State: 100% American Wool, superwashed for durability and washability, with 150 yards per skein
  • O-Wash Worsted in Bull Thistle colorway: Yardage requirements begin at 585 yards for the smallest size and increase to 650 yards for larger sizes

All recommended yarns are worsted weight, a medium yarn weight that works well for structured garments and clear stitch definition. Worsted weight yarn creates a fabric with good drape and durability, making it ideal for a sweater designed to be worn regularly.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Squared Sweater is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods. The yoke-down technique and geometric patterning require comfort with shaping, pattern reading, and managing multiple design elements simultaneously, though the pattern provides guidance throughout the process.
