Good service as always.
Easy pattern to follow and easy to see what comes next after you have the pattern set in your work.
Pattern is worked over a multiple of 34 +17 stitches. Note that if you are using the same garter stitch border that is shown, you will have to add 24 to the total number of cast on stitches.
Technique used: Cast On Knit and Purl Bind Off
Notes: I used a full 4 balls off the yarn with very little remaining. As a precaution, you may want to purchase 5 balls.
I used the long tail cast on and Elizabeth Zimmerman's Sewn Bind off but you can use whichever cast on/off you prefer.
Happy Knitting!
Square within a Square is a beginner-friendly knit blanket pattern designed by Mockingbird Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring 40 inches (101.5 centimeters) wide by 40 inches (101.5 centimeters) long, making it an ideal size for a cozy throw blanket or lap blanket. The design features a geometric motif created through strategic placement of knit and purl stitches, forming nested square patterns across the fabric.
This knit blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners while creating visual interest through textural contrast. The pattern uses a combination of knit and purl stitches arranged in repeating rows to build the geometric square-within-square design. Stitch markers are used throughout the project to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistency across the 177 cast-on stitches. The blanket begins with a garter stitch border—created by knitting every row—which frames the central patterned section and provides a finished edge.
The Square within a Square pattern calls for U.S. 8 / 5mm needles, which can be either straight or circular needles depending on your preference. The blanket requires approximately 1250 yards (1098 metres) of worsted weight yarn, specifically Sprightly Worsted Weight yarn as recommended in the pattern. Additional supplies needed include two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.
The pattern is worked in a multiple of 34 stitches plus 17, with an additional 24 stitches added if you choose to include the garter stitch border. The 177 cast-on stitches include this border allowance. The pattern consists of repeating row sequences that build the nested square design, with specific instructions for knit and purl placement that create the geometric visual effect. Stitch markers are moved with each row to help maintain pattern accuracy throughout the project.
Classified as a beginner difficulty pattern, Square within a Square is accessible to knitters new to blanket projects. The pattern uses only basic knitting fundamentals—knit and purl stitches—without requiring advanced techniques such as increases, decreases, or color changes. This makes it an excellent project for developing consistency and rhythm in knitting while creating a substantial, finished heirloom piece.
