The Sprinkles on Top Cowl is the perfect pattern for that special skein or two of super bulky yarn you’ve been saving! It works equally well with roving and non-roving yarns, and is so beginner-friendly. If you can knit, purl, and work in the round, you can make this cowl! With chunky yarn and big needles, this cowl works up in an afternoon.
The PDF includes a chart (in addition to written instructions) for the two-round repeat that forms the main body of the cowl.

Sprinkles on Top Cowl by Allison Bostrom
Project Overview
The Sprinkles on Top Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Allison Bostrom of Clair de Lune Fiber Art. This downloadable PDF pattern is specifically created to showcase special skeins of super bulky yarn, making it an ideal project for crafters looking to highlight premium or unique yarn selections in a quick, satisfying knit.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a cowl—a circular neckwear accessory that can be worn as a versatile layer. The cowl construction makes it suitable for various styling options and occasions, from casual everyday wear to more dressed-up looks depending on yarn choice and fiber content.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Weight: Super bulky (weight category 6) yarn in either roving or non-roving formats. The pattern calls for 100-115 grams or 80-100 yards of yarn.
Sample Yarns Used: The pattern was tested with Loops & Threads Horizon Tweed in Cream and Lion Brand Heartland Thick & Quick in Katmai, providing examples of suitable yarn options for this project.
Needles and Notions: Circular needles measuring 10.0 mm in size, with a 20-24 inch circumference. Additional materials include a stitch marker, tape measure, scissors, and a yarn needle for finishing.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Sprinkles on Top Cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless tubular garments. The primary stitch used is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side.
Gauge Information: The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches by 13.5 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. However, the pattern notes that meeting exact gauge is not strictly necessary, particularly when using roving yarn. Crafters should be aware that slight variations in gauge may affect yardage requirements and final dimensions.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
This pattern is rated as beginner-level, making it accessible to knitters new to circular needle work and in-the-round construction. The straightforward stockinette stitch and simple construction require only basic knitting knowledge, while the super bulky yarn weight allows projects to work up quickly and visibly, providing satisfying progress for newer crafters.
