Product Description
This is a pattern for a delicate lace shawl made using fingering weight yarn. It is comprised of a cable stitch with a lace border. The border can be enhanced with beads, as is shown in the picture. The beads are optional but bead placement is included in the chart. Altogether, it makes a very unusual and exquisite shawl. The two sides are joined by picking up stitches in the center of the shawl.
Included in the pattern are several ways to add beads to your knitting.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of cable knitting).
The yarn used in the sample is Mrs. Crosby’s Hat Box in light green. The beads are Toho metallic purple #461 in size #6. The color combination is striking. Of course, you can use a more subdued or traditional color combination.
The stitches are charted, and the stitches came to us from Canada and the creative mind of Annie Maloney.
Any heavy weight fingering yarn or light weight sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Springfield Beaded Shawl by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Springfield Beaded Shawl is an intermediate to advanced knitting project designed by Linda Lehman that creates an elegant, heirloom-quality wearable. This shawl combines traditional lace knitting with decorative beadwork to produce a sophisticated accessory suitable for special occasions or everyday elegance. The design employs an innovative construction method that eliminates the need for complex finishing techniques such as the Kitchener Stitch or three-needle bind off, making the completion process more straightforward despite the advanced lace work involved.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a rectangular wrap-style shawl with finished dimensions of approximately 21¾ inches by 72–74 inches. The shawl is designed as a lace-weight garment that drapes beautifully when worn, making it suitable for layering over shoulders or wrapping around the body. The finished piece is intended to become an heirloom accessory due to its intricate construction and timeless design aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Springfield Beaded Shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques that require intermediate to advanced skill level, particularly a solid understanding of lace knitting principles. The most distinctive aspect of this design is its unique construction method that allows two halves of the shawl to be joined without requiring either the Kitchener Stitch (a grafting technique used to seamlessly join live stitches) or the three-needle bind off (a method for binding off two pieces together). This innovative approach simplifies the finishing process while maintaining the integrity and beauty of the lace pattern.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The shawl features lace stitch patterns as its primary structural element. Lace knitting involves the strategic use of yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns with visual interest and lightness. The pattern utilizes standard knitting abbreviations including K for knit stitches, P for purl stitches, YO for yarn overs (which create the characteristic holes in lace), and CO for cast-on stitches. The combination of these stitches creates an intricate lace fabric that serves as the foundation for bead placement.
Beadwork Integration
Beads are incorporated throughout the shawl to add both visual interest and dimensional beauty to the lace pattern. The design calls for 125 grams of size #6 Japanese seed beads, which are integrated into the knitted fabric during construction. These beads enhance the elegance of the finished piece and contribute to its heirloom quality, creating a sophisticated interplay of light and texture across the lace ground.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 1000–1200 yards of fingering weight yarn in sport weight category. Fingering weight yarn is thin and delicate, appropriate for creating the fine gauge required for lace knitting and bead integration.
- Needles: U.S. size #6 (4.00 mm) knitting needles, which are sized to work with fingering weight yarn and achieve the required lace gauge.
- Beads: 125 grams of size #6 Japanese seed beads for embellishment throughout the shawl.
- Gauge: Approximately 4½ stitches per inch when worked in lace stitch and moderately blocked for lace. While gauge is not critical for this garment, variations in gauge will affect final measurements and yardage requirements, making gauge checking important for accurate results.
Skill Requirements
This project is rated as intermediate to advanced, assuming the knitter already possesses solid knowledge of lace knitting techniques. Successful completion requires comfort with reading lace charts, managing yarn overs and decreases, understanding how to integrate beads into knitted fabric, and the ability to block lace properly to achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape.
