Product Description

Two styles of tea cosy in double knit yarn to celebrate spring

The pattern for the cottage uses charts for block colour knitting (intarsia) for the windows and doors. I have given a link to an excellent tutorial for anyone new to this. I tried a new technique using slip stitch for the windows and have included full instructions. (its much easier than following the block colour for small sections of colour) The front and back walls are worked separately then the roof is knit in one piece across the top of both walls.

I have given ideas for the shrubs etc - but as i’m not great at embroidery use your own imagination and skills here!

The sheep on a hill cosy is an easy pattern which doesn't use intarsia. The sheep are knit using separate lengths of fluffy yarn with the green or blue yarn held loosely at the back of work.

I used a slightly small needle than usual for the main knitting as this gives a thicker texture to give better insulation.

Spring Tea Cosies by linmaryknits

Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern collection features two charming spring-themed tea cosies designed by linmaryknits. Both designs showcase delightful seasonal imagery worked in double knit yarn using intermediate-level knitting techniques. These cosy covers are practical and decorative accessories perfect for keeping teapots warm while celebrating the spring season.

Designs Included

Lilac Beamed Cottage Tea Cosy

This design features a picturesque spring cottage scene with lilac walls and charming details. The cottage is framed by pink and white blossoms around the windows, creating a romantic and whimsical aesthetic. The pattern uses block colour knitting techniques to build this detailed cottage imagery.

  • Materials: 75g lilac double knit yarn for the main cottage walls
  • Finished Measurements: Height 7.5 inches by 8.5 inches width
  • Yarn Weight: Double knit (DK)

Sheep on a Hill Tea Cosy

This design depicts a peaceful spring pastoral scene featuring fluffy sheep grazing on a hillside landscape. Bright yellow buttercups dot the meadow, adding cheerful colour and seasonal charm to the composition.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Both tea cosies are worked using block colour knitting, also known as intarsia. This technique involves using separate balls of yarn for each distinct block of colour, with yarns twisted together at colour changes to prevent holes from forming in the finished fabric.

  • Primary Stitch: Stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl) forms the foundation of both designs
  • Core Stitches Used: Knit (k), purl (p), increase (inc), yarn forward (yf), slip (sl), and pass slipped stitch over (psso)
  • Colour Technique: Block colour knitting for creating pictorial designs

Tension and Needles

Proper tension is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies a tension of 24 stitches by 32 rows measured over 4 inches using 3.75mm needles worked in stocking stitch.

Materials Required

These tea cosies are worked in double knit yarn, a versatile weight suitable for intermediate knitters. The Lilac Beamed Cottage Tea Cosy requires 75g of lilac double knit yarn for the main walls, with additional yarn needed for the contrasting blossom and window details.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, these patterns are suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colour work and more complex stitch sequences. The block colour knitting technique requires attention to detail and careful yarn management but provides excellent practice in this rewarding method of creating pictorial knitwear.
