Product Description
This tank top is based on the Spoon by Christine Miserandino, a metaphor that chronically ill people use.
This is a quick tank pattern with a front design added using duplicate stitch. The tank is knitted in front and back panels, then color work is added before the tank is seamed and neck and arm borders are added in seed stitch. There are 3 color work charts to choose from, based on size and preference.
There is one main color and one contrasting color used for duplicate stitch. It is important that the yarns used are the same weight and fiber content, although it isn’t imperative for them to be the same brand. You can use whatever yarn brand and fiber content you want - just remember that you need to match gauge! I chose to knit mine in 100% cotton to make it a summer top but you could easily use any other fiber content.

What is Being Made
The Spoonie Top is a quick-to-knit tank top pattern designed by Alix Kramer of I Run This Knit. This sleeveless garment features a decorative front design and is ideal for warm-weather wear. The pattern includes three different color work chart options to accommodate various sizes and personal preferences, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece.
Construction Technique
The Spoonie Top is constructed using a straightforward panel method. The garment is knitted as separate front and back panels, which are then joined together through seaming. After the main body is complete, decorative color work is added to the front using the duplicate stitch technique. Once the color work is finished, the tank is seamed, and borders are added around the neckline and arm openings to finish the edges.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The primary construction uses stockinette stitch for the body panels. The decorative element employs duplicate stitch, a surface embroidery technique that adds color work after the knitting is complete without requiring complex colorwork skills during knitting. The neckline and arm borders are worked in seed stitch, which creates a textured, non-rolling edge finish that is both functional and visually appealing.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Spoonie Top is designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn. Matching gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern uses two yarn colors: one main color and one contrasting color for the duplicate stitch detail. The designer emphasizes that both yarns must be the same weight and fiber content, though they do not need to be the same brand.
The original sample was knitted in Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton (100% cotton) in light grey with paprika as the contrasting color, making it an excellent choice for a summer garment. A second sample was successfully created using Lionbrand Truboo (100% bamboo yarn), demonstrating the pattern's versatility with different fiber contents. Knitters can choose any yarn brand and fiber content they prefer, provided the weight and gauge requirements are met.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an accessible project for knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward panel construction, combined with the post-knitting duplicate stitch embellishment, allows beginners to create a polished, professional-looking tank without navigating complex in-the-round or colorwork techniques during the main knitting process.
