Product Description
Our scary spider cupcake is great fun to make and perfect for kids’ parties and Hallowe’en.
This cupcake is fun and practical to make as only minimal seaming is required. The main cupcake is knitted in one piece from the bottom upwards, with just one seam to sew. Three double pins are used from rows 7-12, to ease the tension from multiple increases (not knitted in the round).
The spider web is finished with simple embroidery running stitches at the end.
Finished size is approx 8cm / 3 inches diameter, and approx 6cm/ 2 inches high.
Spider Cupcake by Louisa Noble
What Is Being Made
The Spider Cupcake is a playful knitted toy designed for children's parties and Halloween celebrations. This small decorative piece combines a cupcake base with a spider character, creating a whimsical and slightly spooky finished item. The completed toy measures approximately 5cm in diameter at the bottom and stands about 5cm high, making it a perfect palm-sized novelty gift or party favor.
Construction Method and Approach
This design is engineered for efficient construction, built in one continuous piece from the bottom upwards. This thoughtful approach minimizes finishing work, as there is only one seam required at the end of the project. The pattern incorporates an interesting structural technique using 3 double-pointed needles for several rows beginning from the 7th row, which allows the knitter to transition from flat knitting into circular knitting without the need for a circular needle. This method is particularly useful for small, seamless projects and helps create a smooth, integrated form.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used
The Spider Cupcake employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern uses cast-on stitches to establish the foundation, with increases worked throughout the early rows to shape the cupcake base. The primary stitches featured are:
- Knit (K) stitches for creating the main fabric
- Purl (P) stitches for texture and shaping
- Increases (Inc 1) worked strategically to expand the piece from 5 stitches to 33 stitches across the first six rows, creating the cupcake's rounded form
Beyond knitting, the project incorporates very basic embroidery and sewing for finishing details, including attaching beads for the spider's eyes and assembling the final piece.
Materials and Specifications
This project requires DK weight yarn in two colors: 50g of white yarn for the cupcake body and 30g of black yarn for the spider elements. The needles specified are size 11 (3mm) needles, which are paired with 3 double-pointed needles of the same size for the circular sections. Additional materials include two small white or clear beads for the spider's eyes, a small piece of stiff cardboard for structural support, and polyester stuffing to give the toy its three-dimensional form.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes the knitter is comfortable with basic cast-on techniques, knit and purl stitches, and simple increases. The transition to working with double-pointed needles and the integration of basic embroidery and sewing skills make this an ideal project for those looking to expand their foundational knitting abilities without tackling advanced techniques.
