Product Description
This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
This project takes approx 4 oz of yarn. The background in the sample was done with 5 colors, around .2 oz of each color. The cacti take approx 1.5 oz & the skull can be done with a few yards of scrap yarn. This is a great way to use up scraps!
Optional: add some white French knots for the cactus needles, or in pink for cactus flowers!
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Southwest Mosaic Crochet Square: Saguaro Cactus by Cyndie Birdsong
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a decorative mosaic crochet square featuring a saguaro cactus design, inspired by the designer's travels to Tucson, Arizona. The square is ideal for use in cushion projects and other home décor applications. Designed by independent crochet designer Cyndie Birdsong and released in June 2021, this pattern combines artistic Southwest imagery with functional crochet construction.
What Is Being Made
The Southwest Mosaic Crochet Square produces a single decorative square showcasing a saguaro cactus motif. Saguaro cacti are iconic desert plants native to the American Southwest, characterized by their tall, columnar shape with distinctive upright arms. This pattern translates that natural imagery into a crochet square suitable for cushion covers, blankets, wall hangings, or as part of a larger patchwork project combining multiple squares from the Southwest Series collection.
Crochet Techniques
This pattern utilizes overlay mosaic crochet, an advanced color work technique that creates detailed images by layering contrasting yarn colors. Overlay mosaic crochet involves working with two colors simultaneously, strategically changing colors to build the design across rows. This technique allows crocheters to create intricate, detailed patterns without the complexity of traditional tapestry crochet, making it accessible to intermediate-level crafters while producing visually striking results.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches combined through the mosaic technique to achieve the saguaro cactus design. Mosaic crochet typically relies on basic stitches worked in alternating colors, with the color changes creating the visual pattern. The overlay method means stitches are worked over previous rows in contrasting colors, building dimension and definition to the cactus motif and surrounding Southwest landscape elements.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern is designed for use with aran or worsted weight yarn, providing a medium-weight option suitable for creating a substantial, durable square. The specific yardage and color requirements are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern. Crafters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for the selected yarn weight, typically in the range of 4.5mm to 5.5mm depending on individual tension and the specific yarn chosen. Multiple yarn colors are required to execute the overlay mosaic technique and create the saguaro cactus and background design elements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. While overlay mosaic crochet requires understanding color changes and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, the pattern provides clear instructions to guide crafters through the process. Beginners should have experience with basic crochet stitches and color changes before attempting this design.
