Product Description

Like many people I’ve struggled through the Covid Pandemic of 2020. Not being able to meet with family and friends was and still is especially tough. Being of a high risk group I also had to stay home for around four months – not easy for someone who is used to being on the go all the time! However like many people during this time I’ve found solace in my crafts. I’ve made scrubs for the nhs, sewn face masks for all the family, spun up several kilos of fleece and the thing that has always given me most comfort in difficult times – knitted up a storm! One night I couldn't sleep so spent a while sketching out new ideas for knits. This hat and the matching gloves are the first of these designs to be released. I hope that you too can find comfort and solace in your crafts.

Solace Beanie by Olach Designs

Project Overview

The Solace Beanie is a knitted hat design created by independent designer Olach Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project was inspired by the designer's personal experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing on the comfort and solace found in the craft of knitting during challenging times. The beanie represents a thoughtful exploration of color and texture, designed as part of a coordinated collection that includes matching gloves.

What Is Being Made

This pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted knitted beanie hat. The design is suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills and offers a complete project for those looking to expand their hat-knitting repertoire. The beanie is part of a larger coordinated collection, allowing makers to create a matching set with the accompanying glove pattern.

Yarn and Materials

The Solace Beanie is worked using Jamieson & Smith 2ply jumper weight yarn, which is 100% Shetland wool. This premium yarn choice offers excellent warmth and durability. The pattern requires 1x 25g ball in each of the chosen color shades, making it an economical project in terms of yardage. The yarn provides approximately 115 meters per 25 grams, offering sufficient length for the completed hat. The designer selected a thoughtful color palette from the Jamieson & Smith range to create visual interest in the finished piece.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As an intermediate-level knitting project, the Solace Beanie incorporates knitting techniques appropriate for knitters with foundational skills and some experience with more complex stitch patterns. The use of 2ply yarn and the structured nature of hat construction means the pattern likely employs fundamental knitting techniques including increases and decreases to shape the crown of the beanie. The pattern is designed to work with standard knitting needles suitable for 4-ply weight yarn, though the actual yarn weight used is 2ply Shetland wool.

Design Inspiration and Context

The Solace Beanie emerged from the designer's creative process during the 2020 pandemic lockdown. Created during a period when the designer was unable to travel or meet with others, this pattern reflects the therapeutic nature of knitting as a craft. The design was sketched during a restless night early in the United Kingdom lockdown, representing one of several new ideas the designer developed during this period of isolation. This beanie joins other pandemic-era projects in the designer's portfolio, including handmade scrubs for the NHS and face masks for family members.
