Product Description
Socks are made up of simple geometrical shapes. The leg and foot are cylinders, the heel flap is a rectangle, the heel is a hemisphere, the gusset is a triangle, and the toe is a trapezoid! So to honour this discovery, I have designed this simple Triangles pattern. The triangles look fuzzy because their solid colour exactly matches the marled background, but you can create a sharper effect if you use a different combination. You could experiment with 2 solid colours - just be as creative as you want! The socks are knitted cuff down with heel flap. The heel, sole and toe are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together on alternate rows, so creating a lovely thick, comfortable sole to walk on with reduced chance of wearing through. Instructions are given in 3 sizes: slimmer foot woman/teenager; average foot woman/slim man; and broader foot/average man.

SOCK GEOMETRY: 'TRIANGLES' by The Wee Duchess
What is Being Made
SOCK GEOMETRY: 'TRIANGLES' is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks featuring geometric triangle motifs. The design celebrates the mathematical shapes inherent in sock construction, translating this concept into a wearable colour work pattern. The socks are constructed using the cuff-down method with a traditional heel flap construction.
Design Inspiration and Customization
The pattern draws inspiration from the natural geometry of sock architecture: the leg and foot form cylinders, the heel flap creates a rectangle, the heel itself is part of a sphere, the ankle and gusset area forms a triangle, and the toe section creates a trapezoid. The triangle motifs appear soft and fuzzy when knitted with variegated yarn for the background main colour. Knitters are encouraged to experiment with alternative colourways—solid colours produce sharper, more defined triangles, while marled yarns on solid backgrounds offer another creative variation.
Techniques Used
- Cuff-down sock construction
- Heel flap method
- Simple colour work with two-colour stranding
- Double-strand knitting on alternate rows for reinforced sole
- Gusset shaping
- Toe decreases
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern uses straightforward stitches suitable for intermediate knitters. The main body employs colour work techniques with only 2 colour strands held simultaneously, making this an accessible introduction to sock colour work. The heel, sole, and toe sections are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together on alternate rows, creating a thicker, more durable fabric in these high-wear areas. This double-strand technique produces a bouncy, comfortable sole with reduced risk of wearing through during regular wear.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is the standard weight for sock knitting and provides the ideal thickness and drape for comfortable, well-fitting socks. The pattern works beautifully with variegated yarn for the background colour, though solid colours are equally suitable depending on the desired visual effect. Knitters will need appropriate sock needles (either double-pointed needles, circular needles, or two circular needles) in a size suitable for 4-ply yarn.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. It is designed for knitters who have experience with basic sock construction and are ready to explore simple colour work. The pattern is not recommended for complete beginners to sock knitting, but those comfortable with heel flaps and basic shaping will find the two-colour stranding technique manageable and rewarding.
