Product Description
Socks are made up of simple geometrical shapes. The leg and foot are cylinders, the heel flap is a rectangle, the heel is a hemisphere, the gusset section is a triangle, and the toe is a trapezoid! So to honour this discovery, I have designed this simple squares pattern. The squares are quite distinct owing to using a solid colour on a marled background, but you can create a softer, fuzzier effect if you use a variegated yarn for the squares on a solid background. You could experiment with 2 solid colours - just be as creative as you want! The socks are knitted cuff down with heel flap. The heel, sole and toe are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together on alternate rows, so creating a lovely thick, comfortable sole to walk on with reduced chance of wearing through. Instructions are given in 3 sizes: slimmer foot woman/teenager; average foot woman/slim man; and broader foot/average man.

What is Being Made
SOCK GEOMETRY: 'SQUARES' is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by The Wee Duchess. This pattern celebrates the geometric shapes that naturally form sock construction by incorporating a simple squares motif throughout the leg and foot. The design is ideal for knitters seeking an intermediate-level project that combines basic colour work with traditional sock architecture.
Design Concept and Inspiration
The pattern is inspired by the observation that socks are fundamentally composed of geometric shapes: the leg and foot form cylinders, the heel flap creates a rectangle, the heel itself is part of a sphere, the ankle and gusset area form a triangle, and the toe section creates a trapezoid. The squares pattern honours this geometric foundation with a straightforward, visually distinct design.
Colour Work and Creative Variations
The squares pattern achieves visual distinction through colour contrast. The primary approach uses a solid colour for the squares against a marled background. However, the pattern encourages creative experimentation: knitters can substitute a variegated yarn for the squares on a solid background to create a softer, fuzzier aesthetic. Alternatively, two solid colours can be used for a different effect. Only 2 colour strands are used simultaneously, making this colour work accessible to intermediate knitters who are not afraid of simple colour work techniques.
Construction Techniques
The socks are knitted using a cuff-down construction method with a traditional heel flap. The heel, sole, and toe sections employ a distinctive technique: 2 strands of yarn are held together on alternate rows. This double-strand approach creates a thick, comfortable, and bouncy sole designed to withstand walking wear while reducing the chance of the sock wearing through prematurely.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the appropriate gauge and fabric density for sock construction. The pattern requires two colours of yarn to execute the squares design, whether using solid and marled combinations, variegated and solid pairings, or two solid colours as preferred by the knitter.
Skill Level
SOCK GEOMETRY: 'SQUARES' is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. It is suitable for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience and basic colour work familiarity who are ready to tackle simple stranded knitting techniques.
