Product Description
Socks are made up of simple geometrical shapes. The leg and foot are cylinders, the heel flap is a rectangle, the heel is a hemisphere, the gusset section is a triangle, and the toe is a trapezoid! So to honour this discovery, I have designed three simple patterns. You can choose to make your shapes 'sharp' or 'fuzzy' depending on what colour of yarn you choose. You could experiment with 2 solid colours, 1 solid and 1 variegated - just be as creative as you want! The socks are knitted cuff down with heel flap. The heel, sole and toe are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together on alternate rows, so creating a lovely thick, comfortable sole to walk on with reduced chance of wearing through. Instructions are given in 3 sizes: slimmer foot woman/teenager; average foot woman/slim man; and broader foot/average man.
The 3 patterns are also available separately.
SOCK GEOMETRY: SQUARES, CIRCLES AND TRIANGLES
What is Being Made
SOCK GEOMETRY: SQUARES, CIRCLES AND TRIANGLES by The Wee Duchess is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed to celebrate the geometric shapes that naturally form sock construction. The pattern teaches knitters to recognize and intentionally highlight the cylindrical leg and foot, rectangular heel flap, spherical heel, triangular ankle and gusset section, and trapezoidal toe that are inherent to sock architecture. These geometric elements are brought to life through strategic colour work, creating visual interest while building practical, wearable socks.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques suited to intermediate knitters. The socks are constructed using the cuff-down method, beginning at the ribbed cuff and working downward toward the toe. A heel flap is worked flat before transitioning to the heel turn, which is shaped to form the curved heel section. The pattern incorporates simple colour work using only two colour strands, making it accessible for knitters new to colourwork without requiring complex Fair Isle or jacquard techniques. A distinctive feature involves holding two strands of yarn together on alternate rows through the heel, sole, and toe sections, creating a thicker, more durable fabric in high-wear areas. This doubling technique produces a bouncy, comfortable sole with reduced risk of wearing through during regular use.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches typical of sock patterns. The cuff is worked in ribbing for elasticity and fit. The leg and foot sections use stockinette stitch as the base fabric for colour work. The heel flap employs a slipped-stitch heel construction, and the heel turn uses short-row shaping to create the curved heel pocket. The gusset decreases shape the ankle area, and the toe is finished with standard toe decreases that taper the foot to a point.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
SOCK GEOMETRY is designed for 4-ply yarn, a standard weight for sock knitting that provides good stitch definition and durability. The pattern is flexible regarding colour choices: knitters can use variegated yarn on a solid background to create soft, fuzzy geometric shapes, or choose solid colours for sharper, more distinct geometric definition. This flexibility allows crafters to customize the visual impact of their socks based on available yarn and personal preference. The pattern is provided in three sizes to accommodate slimmer feet, ensuring a proper fit across different foot widths. Specific needle size recommendations are not included in the excerpt provided, though 4-ply sock patterns typically use needles in the 2.0–2.5mm range, worked on double-pointed needles, circular needles, or using the magic loop method.
Design Approach and Creativity
The Wee Duchess encourages creative interpretation throughout the knitting process. Knitters are invited to experiment with yarn choices and colour combinations to produce different visual effects, whether subtle and blended or bold and graphic. This pattern celebrates the mathematical beauty inherent in sock construction, transforming functional garment shaping into intentional design elements. The intermediate difficulty level assumes familiarity with basic sock construction and introduces knitters to simple two-colour work without overwhelming complexity.
