Product Description
This is a free pattern, which is also available on Ravelry.com - please have a look at some of the fab projects already done!
This pattern uses small amounts of dk create your own chocolate truffle/ferrero rocher snowman covers for the dinner table or to hang on the tree.
Crochet terms are UK.
There are a few options available for this pattern so please read through first. Options & changes in yarn colour are given in italics.
I crochet in quite a ‘fluid’ fashion so if you find your snowman is on the slim side then add a few extra increases as mentioned on the pattern or maybe change up a hook size for the body.
Snowman (Chocolate Cover) Decoration by Kippers Ning
What Is Being Made
This is a small crochet snowman decoration designed to hold a Ferrero Rocher chocolate or chocolate truffle, making it perfect for table settings during festive occasions or as a hanging tree decoration. The finished piece is sized appropriately to cradle a single chocolate treat, combining functional design with decorative appeal.
Project Type and Use
- Table setting decoration with practical chocolate-holding function
- Hanging tree ornament
- Festive toy and novelty item
- Suitable for holiday entertaining and gift-giving
Craft and Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern employs UK crochet terminology, which uses different abbreviations than US crochet (for example, UK double crochet is equivalent to US single crochet). The design is worked in the round using foundational crochet techniques, building the snowman body through circular increases and decreases to create a three-dimensional form.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – foundational stitch for starting rows
- Slip stitch (slst) – used to join rounds and create seamless connections
- Double crochet (dc) – basic stitch for fabric construction
- Half treble (htr) – slightly taller stitch used throughout the body
- Half treble decrease (htrdec) – decreases stitches to shape the snowman
- Treble (tr) – taller stitch for specific shaping
- Treble decrease (trdec) – decreases treble stitches for contouring
Materials Required
The pattern calls for double knit (DK) yarn, also known as 8ply yarn, in white for the main snowman body. Additional yarn scraps in various colors are needed for facial features and button details, using finer weights such as 2ply or 4ply yarn, or alternatively embroidery thread for precise detail work.
- 3.5mm crochet hook – sized appropriately for DK yarn
- Sewing needle – for sewing up seams and weaving in yarn ends
- Optional: cotton wool ball for stuffing
- Chocolate truffle or Ferrero Rocher for filling
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round and executing both increases and decreases. The combination of shaping techniques and the need to work with precision for a small decorative item makes it appropriate for crafters beyond the beginner stage.
