Lovely reversible design but cowl too long. I found that be reducing it to 39 stitches rather than 41, I could make a cowl that fit perfectly with just one ball of wall rather than two.

The Snowdrift Cowl is a free, downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Paintbox Yarns, designed to produce a cosy, chunky-weight cowl with clean textural detail. Rated easy/intermediate, it is an ideal project for knitters who are comfortable with basic stitches and ready to explore simple stitch patterning. The finished cowl measures 26 cm (10 in) deep and 80 cm (31½ in) in circumference, making it a generously sized, wrap-around accessory that sits comfortably around the neck and lower face.
The pattern produces a single cowl — a seamless loop of fabric worn around the neck. The construction method is worked flat on straight needles, meaning the cowl is knitted as a long rectangular strip and then seamed at both ends to form the finished loop. This flat construction makes the pattern approachable for knitters who are not yet confident with circular needles or joining in the round, while still delivering a polished, professional result.
The Snowdrift Cowl uses a simple two-row repeating stitch pattern that creates a subtle, textured ribbed surface with a slightly different character to standard rib:
This two-row repeat is worked continuously until the strip reaches the full length. The combination of an all-knit right-side row and an alternating knit-purl wrong-side row produces a fabric with gentle, snowdrift-like texture — soft and squishy thanks to the chunky yarn weight, yet structured enough to hold its shape around the neck. The pattern is written in UK terminology, with US terminology equivalents provided in italics within round brackets throughout.
