Product Description
I can confess; first autumn snowfall always results in me throwing a snowball at Curt. I don’t need full-blown winter to start a snowball fight. Snow is fair game for us!
Worked in the round, Snowball Fight contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.
Snowball Fight Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
Snowball Fight is a knitted sock pattern designed by rhyFlower Knits. These are toe-up socks featuring decorative cluster stitches that create a textured, dimensional fabric reminiscent of snowballs. The pattern offers four finished circumference sizes ranging from 7.5 inches to 9 inches (19 to 23 centimeters) around the ball of the foot, accommodating a range of foot sizes.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several specialized knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The primary decorative technique involves cluster stitches, which create the snowball texture throughout the sock. The pattern uses both three-stitch and four-stitch cluster variations to build visual interest and dimension in the finished fabric.
The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, meaning knitters begin at the toe and work upward toward the calf. This construction method allows for easier fitting and the ability to try on the sock as you work. The sample shown in the pattern was knit on 64 stitches using circular needles, which is the standard method for seamless sock construction.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern incorporates the following specialized stitches and techniques:
- K3 Cluster: Three stitches are placed onto a cable needle, wrapped counterclockwise with the working yarn twice, then slipped to the right needle. This creates a gathered, textured knot.
- K4 Cluster: Four stitches are placed onto a cable needle, wrapped counterclockwise with the working yarn twice, then slipped to the right needle. This variation creates a larger, more prominent snowball effect.
These cluster techniques require the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitches and create the wrapped texture. The wrapping motion is performed counterclockwise and repeated twice per cluster, building up the dimensional quality that gives the socks their snowball appearance.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Snowball Fight socks are designed to be knit with fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply weight yarn. The pattern requires 300 to 500 yards (274 to 458 meters) of yarn, depending on the desired foot length and leg height of the finished sock.
The suggested yarn is Turtlepurl Yarns Striped Turtle Toes, a blend of 75% superwash merino and 25% nylon. This yarn is available in 450-yard (411-meter) skeins weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The sample socks shown in the pattern were knit in the colorway Winter is Coming. The nylon content in this yarn blend provides durability and elasticity, making it well-suited for socks that will receive regular wear.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or the size required to achieve the correct gauge. Circular needles of this length are ideal for knitting socks using the magic loop or two-circular-needle method.
Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, a cable needle for working the cluster stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping sections, and scrap yarn for holding stitches during construction.
Skill Level and Pattern Complexity
Snowball Fight is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. While basic sock construction knowledge is helpful, the primary complexity comes from mastering the cluster stitch technique and managing multiple stitches on a cable needle. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques and reading stitch abbreviations before beginning this project.
