Product Description
Snow Pea Bag in Rowan Creative Linen
What is Being Made
The Snow Pea Bag is a knitted tote bag designed by Lisa Richardson. This intermediate-level project creates a finished bag measuring 35 cm (13¾ inches) wide and 39 cm (15¼ inches) deep. The bag features a structured construction with a gusset and strap, making it a practical accessory suitable for everyday use.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs several key techniques to construct the bag. The main body is worked using a textured stitch pattern, while the gusset and strap sections utilize moss stitch throughout for added structure and visual interest. The pattern requires working with markers to define different sections of the construction, particularly in the gusset area where measurements are taken from specific marker points. The bag is constructed in separate pieces—a main body section and a gusset with integrated strap—which are then assembled.
Stitches Used
- Rib stitch: Used for the main body of the bag, creating vertical lines and elasticity. The ribbing pattern alternates knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) and is continued until the work reaches the specified length.
- Moss stitch: Applied throughout the gusset and strap sections. Moss stitch is formed by alternating knit and purl stitches both horizontally and vertically, creating a dense, textured fabric that provides structure and stability to these functional areas of the bag.
- Cast on and cast off in rib: The edges are finished using ribbed cast-off techniques to maintain consistency with the overall stitch pattern and ensure a professional finish.
Materials
This pattern is designed for Rowan Creative Linen, a DK-weight yarn. The project requires 3 x 100gm balls of yarn. The pattern was photographed in the colorway Foggy 624. Knitting needles required include one pair of 4mm (US 6) needles and one pair of 4½mm (US 7) needles. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to access and print the instructions for reference while working.
Tension and Sizing
Achieving proper tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 18 stitches and 25 rows to 10 cm measured over the main pattern stitch, and 19 stitches and 33 rows to 10 cm measured over moss stitch, both using 4½mm (US 7) needles. Maintaining correct tension ensures the finished bag achieves the intended dimensions and drape.
