Product Description

Smores are Curt’s absolute favorite treat, so I end up baking a ton of smores inspired treats. When he saw Gingersnap’s Spark colorway arrive in the mail, he reminisced over time spent up at the cabin, enjoying them warm and gooey over the campfire as a kid. To honor those beautiful memories, I wanted to create a feet treat that would call up that heartfelt past that he could wear year-round.

Worked in the round, Smores on the Campfire contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.

The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.

Smores on the Campfire Knit Socks by rhyFlower Knits

What is Being Made

Smores on the Campfire is an intermediate-level knit sock pattern designed for knitters seeking a project with visual interest and moderate complexity. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer rhyFlower Knits produces finished socks with a circumference of 7.5, 8, 8.5, or 9 inches (19, 20.5, 21.5, or 23 centimeters), accommodating a range of foot sizes. The sample shown was knit using the toe-up construction method on 64 stitches.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This sock pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic sock construction. The pattern utilizes toe-up construction, a method that begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff, allowing knitters to try on the sock as they work and adjust length to their preference. Cable work is incorporated throughout the design, requiring knitters to use a cable needle to create twisted stitch patterns that add texture and visual dimension to the finished sock.

The pattern includes detailed abbreviations and instructions for cable techniques, specifically 2/1 LC (left cable) and 2/1 LPC (left purl cable) maneuvers. These cable crossings create the decorative elements that give the socks their distinctive appearance. Additionally, the pattern employs increase techniques such as (k1, p1, k1) in 1, which creates three stitches from a single stitch, adding two stitches in one motion—a common method for shaping sock construction.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k)
  • Purl stitch (p)
  • Cable stitches: 2/1 LC (2/1 left cable) and 2/1 LPC (2/1 left purl cable)
  • Increase stitches: (k1, p1, k1) in 1 stitch

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Smores on the Campfire is designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn, requiring 300 to 500 yards (274 to 458 meters) depending on the chosen size and desired leg length. The yardage range accommodates different sock lengths, from shorter ankle versions to longer crew-length socks.

The suggested yarn is GingerSnap – Zest Fingering in a blend of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon. This fiber composition provides the elasticity and durability necessary for sock wear, with the nylon content offering enhanced longevity and the merino delivering softness and temperature regulation. The superwash treatment makes the finished socks machine-washable, a practical consideration for everyday sock use.

Needles and Tools

Knitters will need US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or the size required to obtain the pattern's specified gauge. Circular needles of this length are ideal for toe-up sock construction using the magic loop method or small-circumference knitting. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for executing cable crossings, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction sections.

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Smores on the Campfire is suitable for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience and comfort with cable techniques. The combination of toe-up construction, cable work, and shaping increases the pattern's complexity beyond beginner sock patterns, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their technical skills while creating a wearable, finished garment.
