Product Description
When our children were small we used to play a game with them at bedtime to keep the scary monsters away! We used to blow 1000 kisses into the air and get them to catch them in their hands then pop them under their pillows to give them reassuring kisses if they needed them during the night. Smooriken is Shetland dialect for a kiss and these hats are covered in love to reflect this. If you look closely you may see a smiley monster too! They have been designed to match my Smooriken mittens. Both beanie and tam are knitted entirely in the round rib to crown. Decreases at the crown are done using centered double decreases and if you are unfamiliar with this technique, a hyperlink is included in the pattern explaining how these are done.
Smooriken Beanie and Tam by Olach Designs
What Is Being Made
The Smooriken Beanie and Tam is a downloadable knitting pattern that includes instructions for creating two distinct hat styles: a classic beanie and a tam-o'-shanter. Both designs are inspired by the Shetland dialect word "Smooriken," meaning a kiss, and feature charming details including decorative elements and a playful smiley monster motif hidden within the pattern. These hats are designed to coordinate with the Smooriken Mittens, allowing crafters to create a matching set. The pattern is suitable for beginners and offers versatility in finished hat style while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
Techniques Used
Both the beanie and tam are created using knitting in the round, a fundamental technique for constructing seamless, tubular garments. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a polished, professional finish. Crafters may work in the round using their preferred method, whether that is double-pointed needles (DPNs), circular needles, or other preferred techniques. The pattern accommodates different working preferences while maintaining consistent results.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch-by-stitch details are not provided in the available pattern information, the design incorporates charted elements that create the decorative details and smiley monster feature. The construction uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters, making this an accessible project for those new to hat knitting.
Materials Required
- Yarn Options: The pattern is designed for either Jamieson's Spindrift or Milarrochy Tweed from Kate Davies Design, both premium Shetland wool yarns
- Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift: 100% Shetland wool, 105 meters (115 yards) per 25-gram ball, classified as 4-ply weight yarn
- Needles: One set of 2.75mm double-pointed needles for working with Spindrift yarn, or one set of 3mm needles (needle size specifications for Milarrochy Tweed working are referenced but not fully detailed in available content)
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply weight provides excellent stitch definition and is ideal for displaying the charted pattern details
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to hat construction or those seeking an accessible in-the-round project. The straightforward construction and beginner-appropriate techniques ensure that crafters at all skill levels can successfully complete either the beanie or tam version.
Pattern Format
The Smooriken Beanie and Tam is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to complete pattern instructions for both hat styles in a single document.
