One of the smartest women I know asked me for a scarf - and she agreed to model it, too.

Many thanks to Stephanie for modelling!

Smart Woman Scarf by Tanja Osswald

What Is Being Made

The Smart Woman Scarf is a cuddly, wide rib scarf designed by Tanja Osswald. This classic accessory measures approximately 25 cm × 170 cm (10 in × 55 in), making it a generous, wearable length perfect for everyday wear. The scarf features distinctive zigzagging slip stitch crochet ribs that set it apart from traditional knitted scarves, offering a unique textured appearance with excellent drape and comfort.

Craft and Techniques

This project is worked entirely in crochet, making it an excellent choice for crocheters seeking a beginner-friendly pattern with sophisticated results. The scarf employs specialized slip stitch techniques that create its signature ribbed texture. Rather than using basic slip stitches, the pattern utilizes advanced slip stitch variations to achieve the characteristic zigzagging rib effect.

The primary techniques used include:

  • Front loop only slip stitch (F) — a slip stitch worked through only the front loop of the stitch, creating dimensional texture
  • Inverse back loop only slip stitch (iB) — a slip stitch variation worked through only the back loop in an inverse manner, contributing to the zigzag pattern
  • Chain stitches (ch) — foundational stitches used to establish the base and structure

These slip stitch variations are worked in a repeating rib pattern that creates the scarf's distinctive textured appearance while remaining accessible to beginners willing to learn the specific slip stitch techniques.

Stitches Used

The Smart Woman Scarf relies on a focused selection of crochet stitches:

  • Chain stitch (ch) — used for foundation and pattern construction
  • Front loop only slip stitch (F) — creates dimensional texture by working into only the front loop
  • Inverse back loop only slip stitch (iB) — produces the zigzag effect characteristic of the rib pattern

The pattern uses David Burchall's terminology for naming slip stitch variations, ensuring clarity and precision in the instructions. The gauge for this project is 32 stitches and 26 rows in a 10 cm × 10 cm (4 in × 4 in) swatch when worked in the rib pattern and measured unstretched.

Materials and Yarn

This scarf is worked in sport weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates a drapey, comfortable fabric ideal for scarves. The pattern calls for two colors of Zitron Herbstwind, a premium yarn composed of 100% Merino extrafine fiber. The specific materials required are:

  • 150 g of Zitron Herbstwind in color 15 (bronze)
  • 150 g of Zitron Herbstwind in color 07 (dark blue)
  • One 4.50 mm crochet hook

Each 50 g skein of Zitron Herbstwind provides 165 meters of yarn, offering excellent yardage for creating the full-length scarf. The 100% Merino extrafine fiber ensures softness, breathability, and a luxurious feel against the skin. The two-color combination of bronze and dark blue creates visual interest through the zigzagging slip stitch pattern, allowing the colors to interact dynamically as the ribs form.
