Product Description
With a new baby on the way I wanted to make a jumper to keep him snug when out and about. The sleeping panda is worked on the front using the intarsia method from a chart.
The jumper is knitted in DK yarn using 3.75mm and 4mm needles. It is knitted flat and then seamed. A super stretchy cast off is used for the neck so that it can easily be pulled over the babies head without the need for buttons.
Sleeping Panda Baby Jumper Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Sleeping Panda Baby Jumper is a charming knitted sweater designed for infants and young toddlers by designer Helen Auld. This pattern offers four size options to accommodate babies from newborn through 18 months old, with chest measurements ranging from 40.5 cm (16 inches) for the 0-3 month size up to 48 cm (19 inches) for the 12-18 month size. The jumper features a playful panda design, making it an engaging and adorable garment for little ones.
Garment Specifications
- Available Sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months
- Chest Measurements: 40.5 cm, 43 cm, 45.5 cm, and 48 cm respectively
- Length: Ranges from 25.5 cm (10 inches) for the smallest size to 34.5 cm (13½ inches) for the largest
- Sleeve Length: Varies from 17 cm (7 inches) to 24 cm (10 inches) depending on size
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows. The pattern utilizes standard shaping techniques including decreases (knitting or purling 2 stitches together to reduce stitch count) and increases (knitting or purling in the front and back of a stitch to add stitches). These fundamental techniques allow the designer to shape the body, sleeves, and neckline of the jumper to fit properly across the different size ranges.
Yarn and Materials
The Sleeping Panda Baby Jumper is crafted using DK weight yarn, a lightweight option ideal for baby garments. The pattern calls for four coordinating yarn colors across all sizes:
- Yarn A: Sirdar Snuggly DK in Lemon (shade 252) – 2 balls for all sizes
- Yarn B: Sirdar Snuggly DK in White (shade 251) – 1 ball for all sizes
- Yarn C: King Cole Pricewise DK in Black (shade 048) – 1 ball for all sizes
- Yarn D: King Cole Pricewise DK in Red (shade 009) – 1 ball for all sizes
The multicolor yarn selection allows crafters to create the panda design details against the main lemon-colored body of the jumper. Knitting needles required include both size 3¾ mm and size 4 mm needles, with the size variation allowing for different fabric densities in specific sections of the pattern. Additional notions needed are a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for finishing.
Gauge and Tension
To ensure the finished jumper fits properly across all size ranges, the pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm × 10 cm (4 inches × 4 inches) in stocking stitch. Achieving the correct gauge before beginning the project is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements.
