Sionnach Cushion by Ciara Ní Reachtnín
What is Being Made
The Sionnach Cushion is a whimsical fox-themed decorative cushion designed by Ciara Ní Reachtnín. This knitted project creates a finished cushion measuring 40 cm (15.75") by 34 cm (13.5") square, making it a substantial home décor piece suitable for children's rooms, living spaces, or as a unique handmade gift. The design combines playful aesthetics with intermediate-level knitting techniques, resulting in a three-dimensional stuffed cushion with distinctive facial features.
Techniques Used
The Sionnach Cushion employs intarsia knitting as its primary colorwork technique. This method allows knitters to create detailed pictorial designs by working with multiple colors of yarn simultaneously, changing colors at specific points to build the fox image across the fabric. The intarsia approach is worked from the bottom up, enabling the knitter to follow a color chart while maintaining consistent tension and stitch quality.
The cushion is constructed in two separate pieces—a front and back panel—both worked flat in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit-purl combination that creates a smooth, uniform fabric surface. Once both pieces are complete and blocked to size, they are sewn together using a tapestry needle, then stuffed with toy filling to create the three-dimensional cushion form. Additional embellishment is achieved through contrasting yarn embroidery, which adds facial details and definition to the fox design. Knitted ears are worked separately and attached, providing textural variety and dimensional interest to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The primary stitch forming the foundation of the intarsia colorwork
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create stocking stitch fabric
- Stocking Stitch (St st): The main fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows (on right side) and purl rows (on wrong side), producing a smooth, flat surface ideal for displaying intarsia color patterns
- Cast On (CO): The foundation technique for beginning the cushion panels
- Slip (sl): Used as needed during color changes and construction
Materials
This project uses Studio Donegal Donegal Aran Tweed yarn, a 100% wool fiber available in 50-gram balls with approximately 88 yards (80 meters) per ball. The yarn weight is aran (also classified as heavy worsted), providing excellent stitch definition for intarsia work and creating a fabric with good drape and durability.
Yarn colors required: Heather (main color, 4 balls), Fuchsia (contrast color 1, 1 ball), and Aubergine (contrast color 2, 1 ball). The color palette creates a warm, appealing fox design with complementary accent tones.
Needles and tools: 4.5 mm (US size 7) needles, available in straight or circular configurations according to knitter preference. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for seaming and embroidery work, and toy stuffing for filling the completed cushion. The finished fabric should be hand washed only and reshaped while wet to maintain its blocked dimensions and appearance.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 16 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 4.5 mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for the cushion to reach its intended finished size of 40 cm by 34 cm square.
