After reading a post in one of the forums saying that “there are no dog sweater patterns suitable for beginners” I started creating this simple pattern. My aim was to make it as simple as possible, suitable for beginners and nice to look at.
The finished garment stretches easily - suits growing and/or active little dogs.
Pattern suitable for advanced (adventurous) beginner: knit, wrap and turn, cast on/off in the middle/back of the row.
Finished measurements:
S around chest 12.5in/31cm, back length 10.5in/26cm.
M around chest 14in/35cm, back length 11.6in/29cm.
L around chest 15.5in/39cm, back length 12.8in/32cm.
Materials/Tools:
- Yarn DK (11 wpi), S: 120m/131yd; M: 165m/181yd; L: 188m/206yd
- Knitting needles 3.75 mm (US 5)
- Crochet hook 3.5 mm (US E/4)
- Button, 1 pcs.
- Tapestry needle
This is a knitted sweater designed specifically for small dogs, available in three sizes: Small (12.5 inches / 31 cm chest girth), Medium (14 inches / 35 cm chest girth), and Large (15.5 inches / 39 cm chest girth). The sweater is measured from the base of the collar to the base of the tail, with back lengths ranging from 10.5 inches (26 cm) for size Small to 12.8 inches (32 cm) for size Large. The garment features a button closure and is designed with simplicity and elegance in mind, making it an accessible project for beginner knitters.
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary stitch structure is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric by knitting every row. The sweater is constructed using either circular or straight needles, allowing knitters to choose their preferred working method. The pattern includes basic shaping techniques and finishing methods, including binding off stitches and incorporating a single button for closure. A crochet hook is also used in the construction process, indicating that basic crochet finishing techniques may be incorporated into the design.
The sweater is worked primarily in garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row when working flat on straight needles, or alternating knit and purl rounds when working on circular needles. This stitch is ideal for beginners because it requires only basic knitting knowledge and creates a durable, textured fabric with excellent stretch and recovery—important qualities for a fitted garment on a moving dog. The gauge for this pattern is 21 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked with 3.75 mm (US size 5) needles in garter stitch, providing a clear benchmark for achieving proper fit.
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with the original yarn specified as Adriafil Top Ball (55% Merino wool, 45% Acrylic blend; 500 meters per 200 gram skein). Yarn quantities vary by size: Size Small requires 48 grams (120 meters / 131 yards), Size Medium requires 66 grams (165 meters / 181 yards), and Size Large requires 75 grams (188 meters / 206 yards). The pattern notes that these amounts have been increased by approximately 10% to accommodate variations in individual knitting styles and tension.
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward, confidence-building project. The reliance on garter stitch and basic construction techniques means that knitters can focus on gauge, fit, and finishing without navigating complex stitch patterns or advanced shaping.
