Product Description
I was asked to design a simple dishcloth for beginners using only sc, hdc, & dc for a class. Here is what I came up with.
Pattern is written in American Terms. If you have converted this pattern to any other language please let me know. I’d love to offer it to others if possible.
Since this was designed as a teaching tool the PDF will remain free. You can use it for any of your classes, etc. Please mention me as the designer however.
Simple Dishcloth by Jessica Phillips
What Is Being Made
The Simple Dishcloth is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Jessica Phillips. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a practical, everyday dishcloth suitable for kitchen use. The finished piece measures approximately 27 stitches wide and uses a straightforward row-by-row construction method that makes it an ideal first project for those new to crochet.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses the crochet technique, a fiber craft that creates fabric using a single hook and loops of yarn. Crochet is known for its versatility and relative ease of learning compared to other fiber arts. The Simple Dishcloth employs a fundamental approach to crochet construction by combining multiple basic stitches in alternating rows, allowing crafters to practice stitch consistency and tension control while producing a useful finished item.
Stitches Used
The Simple Dishcloth pattern incorporates four essential crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the initial base and turning chains between rows
- Single Crochet (sc) – The shortest and tightest of the stitches used, creating dense fabric sections
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch that falls between single crochet and double crochet in terms of height and drape
- Double Crochet (dc) – The tallest stitch in this pattern, creating a more open fabric texture
Important Note on Stitch Counting: When working half double crochet and double crochet rows, the turning chain (ch2 for hdc rows and ch3 for dc rows) counts as the first stitch of that row. Crafters must skip the first stitch on these rows to maintain proper stitch count and prevent accidental increases.
Materials Required
The Simple Dishcloth requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 1–2 ounces of worsted weight cotton yarn. Cotton yarn is ideal for dishcloths because it is absorbent, durable, and machine washable, making the finished cloth practical for kitchen tasks.
- Crochet Hook: 5mm (size H) crochet hook, which is the standard hook size for worsted weight yarn
- Tapestry Needle: Used for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the project
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Simple Dishcloth is designed for those new to crochet. The pattern uses only basic stitches and a simple row-by-row structure, making it an excellent introduction to fundamental crochet techniques. Notably, gauge is not critical for this project, which removes pressure on new crafters to achieve precise measurements and allows for a more relaxed learning experience.
Pattern Format
This pattern is available as a free, downloadable PDF document, making it accessible and convenient for digital reference while crafting. The PDF format allows crafters to print the instructions or reference them on a device while working.
