Product Description

It’s all about the ruffles in this tank. Spring is my favorite time to shop. The fashion of this season is always so pretty and feminine. This tank with its dramatic and frilly collar will look delightful paired with tailored capris or a wispy skirt.

I loved knitting this tank. Even though it's a pretty small gauge, all that stockinette punctuated with occasional increases and decreases for the waist and bust shaping make it a really relaxing garment to knit.

As you can tell, Knit Picks is among my favorite yarn brands. This design is no exception. The sample was knit out of Knit Picks Comfy Sport, and depending on your size only requires 5-9 balls, making it a very reasonably priced project.

Silverlight Tank Top by Maria Yarley

Garment Overview

Silverlight is an advanced-level knit tank top designed to celebrate spring fashion with dramatic ruffled detailing. This feminine sleeveless top features a striking frilly collar that makes it an ideal layering piece for pairing with tailored capris or wispy skirts. The design emphasizes negative one to zero inches of ease, creating a fitted silhouette that showcases the delicate construction of the ruffled neckline.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This advanced knitting project employs circular needle techniques to create a seamless garment. The pattern utilizes both a 29-inch circular needle and double-pointed needles (DPNs) for construction, with the option to use the magic loop method as an alternative if preferred. The ruffled collar represents the signature design element and requires careful attention to stitch manipulation and shaping to achieve the dramatic, frilly effect that defines this tank.

Stitches and Gauge

The Silverlight tank is worked to a gauge of 23 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches. This moderate gauge is typical for sport-weight yarn and contributes to the refined drape and delicate appearance of the finished garment. Advanced knitters will appreciate the precision required to maintain consistent gauge throughout the project, particularly in the ruffled collar sections where stitch manipulation creates the dimensional texture.

Sizing and Finished Dimensions

  • X-Small: 29.25 inches bust
  • Small: 33 inches bust
  • Medium: 36.75 inches bust
  • Large: 41.5 inches bust
  • X-Large: 45.25 inches bust

The pattern is available in five sizes to accommodate a range of body types. The fitted design with minimal ease means the garment will conform closely to the body, and knitters should note that the cotton-blend yarn will stretch slightly with wear, so sizing down may be advisable for a longer-lasting fit.

Yarn Specifications

Silverlight is designed using Knit Picks Comfy Sport yarn in the Whisker colorway. This sport-weight yarn is a blend of 75% cotton and 25% acrylic, offering breathability ideal for spring wear while the acrylic content provides durability and elasticity. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • X-Small and Small: 5–6 balls (625–750 yards)
  • Medium, Large, and X-Large: 7–9 balls (875–1,150 yards)

Each ball contains 136 yards (124 meters) and weighs 50 grams (1.76 ounces). The cotton-acrylic blend is noted for its comfort and wearability, though knitters should be aware that cotton lacks the memory of wool and the finished garment may stretch after one or two wearings, making thoughtful size selection important.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires #3 or 3.25mm needles in two formats: a 29-inch circular needle for the body and matching double-pointed needles for smaller circumferences such as the armholes or neckline. Alternatively, advanced knitters may use the magic loop method throughout the project using only the circular needle, providing flexibility in tool selection based on personal preference and experience level.
