Product Description
This is what happens when a sweater and a song get stuck in your head on a walk through the snowy woods. That, and your favorite dyer releases a new mohair-silk base. Cozy and perfect as a silvery winter’s day or whiskers on kittens. It’s your new favorite thing.
The top-down, drop shoulders require zero finishing (!) and are shaped with short rows to minimize underarm bulk, while the stunning, all-over cable pattern is way easier than it looks (you only have to cable every 10th row!).
The fabric is worked with the fingering yarn and mohair-silk laceweight held together to a DK gauge, and it’s intended to be worn with anywhere from 1-3” of positive ease. Because the cable pattern has a lot of stretch to it, however, there’s a lot of flexibility in the fit.
Stitches for the stockinette sleeves are picked up from around the armscye and worked down to the hem, but if you prefer to knit them separately and seam them in, that would be pretty easy (since it’s not a set-in sleeve).
Silver White Winters Knit Sweater by Mary Annarella
What Is Being Made
Silver White Winters is an advanced knit sweater featuring an all-over cable pattern designed to be both visually stunning and surprisingly accessible to experienced knitters. This top-down construction sweater showcases a soft, luxurious fabric created by combining two complementary yarns held together throughout the project.
Construction and Design Features
The sweater employs a top-down construction method with drop shoulders, a design choice that simplifies the knitting process while creating a flattering silhouette. The garment incorporates short row shaping at the underarms to minimize bulk and create a more refined fit. This thoughtful shaping technique ensures comfort and a polished appearance when wearing the finished piece.
Cable Pattern and Stitch Work
The defining feature of Silver White Winters is its all-over cable pattern that covers the entire sweater. Despite its intricate appearance, the pattern is engineered for accessibility—you only need to work cable stitches every 10th row, making it manageable for advanced knitters without requiring constant attention to complex cable crossings. The pattern is notably stretchy and can be blocked wider than the finished gauge if desired, offering flexibility in the final dimensions of the garment.
Gauge and Yarn Specifications
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch and 23 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in the cable pattern (when slightly stretched) after blocking. These measurements are worked on a size 5 needle or whatever size is needed to achieve gauge. Pre-blocking gauges may vary slightly, with the designer's samples showing approximately 21.5 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette and 24 stitches per 4 inches in the cable pattern.
Materials and Yarn Details
Silver White Winters is designed to be knit with two yarns held together simultaneously. The primary yarn is Miss Babs Moonglow, a luxurious blend of mohair and silk, offered in the colorway Quicksilver. This yarn provides 435 yards per 100 grams. The pattern requires 3 to 6 skeins of Miss Babs Moonglow depending on the size being knitted, with yardage increasing across the size range. A strand of mohair-silk laceweight yarn is held together with the Moonglow throughout the project, creating the soft, sophisticated fabric that defines this sweater.
Yarn Weight and Needle Requirements
This project uses DK weight yarn (fingering weight held with laceweight), worked on size 5 needles. The combination of these materials and tools creates a fabric with excellent drape and a refined appearance suitable for an advanced knitting project.
Skill Level
Silver White Winters is classified as an advanced knitting project. While the cable pattern itself is simplified through its spacing, the overall construction—including top-down shaping, short row techniques, and working with two yarns held together—requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with intermediate to advanced techniques.
